As an age-old Chinese saying goes, “you may know what a person looks like, but you may not know what is in his mind”. Actually, numerous examples exist to prove that people judge others by their physical appearance and make mistakes. A good case in point is Lu Xun, the great modern Chinese writer, who was refused the access to an important conference just because of his common clothes.
The reason why we should not judge others by their physical appearance is obvious: a person’s outlook is often inconsistent with his or her inner world or social status according to worldly criteria. Again, take Lu Xun as an example. In the worldly view, as one of the most prestigious writers in his time, he should be dressed very formally and expensively when coming to a meeting, instead of being in informal and cheap clothes. The same is true with Ji Xianlin, the great late linguist and professor in Beijing University, who was often taken by students as a common worker because of his clothing.
Therefore, we should be cautious when judging others and should take into consideration more factors than physical appearance.
