第一节 (共10小题; 每小题2分,满分20分)

(A)

Trees should only be pruned(修剪)when there is a good and clear reason for doing so and, the number of such reasons is small. Pruning involves the cutting away of overgrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way.

Firstly, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches, which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut out diseased or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the center and so preventing the free movement of air.

One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but it is a wound that will heal (recover).Often there is a race between the healing and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce that risk of death as far as possible. It is important to make the area, which has been pruned, smooth and clean, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours and then paint it with one of the materials available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose. Pruning is usually done in winter, for then you can see the shape of the tree clearly without interference(妨碍)from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed. If this does happen, it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly.

31.Why should pruning be done?

A. To make the tree grow taller.

B. To get rid of the small branches.

C. To improve the shape of the tree.

D. To make the small branches thicker.

32. Trees become unhealthy if the gardener________.

A. allows too many branches to grow in the middle

B. does not protect them from the wind

C. damages some of the small side branches

D. forces them to grow too quickly

33. What was the writer’s purpose when writing the article?

A. To discuss different methods of pruning.

B. To introduce some common knowledge of pruning.

C. To explain how trees develop disease.

D. To give practical instruction for pruning a tree.

The following are two letters to the editor of a school newspaper

Dear editor,

I’d like to express my opinion about grades. Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades. Fortunately, most educators are becoming aware of the fact that students have different interests and abilities. I understand that grades are useful, but grades often limit creativity. Competing for better grades causes many students to turn down opportunities to pursue music, dramatics and sports. Grades force an arbitrary(武断的) standard of success on everyone. I do not demand as some extremists do, that grades be removed immediately. However, I do believe that less emphasis should be placed on grades. I hope that some day grades will become optional at Village High School.

Magdalena Smith

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear editor,

I’d like to say something about grades. Let’s face the facts about grades. Grades perform three basic functions. First, grades motivate(激发) students to work at their highest level of competence. Second, they act as a reward for hardworking students and as a punishment to students who do not work hard.

Finally, grades are used as a useful standard by which to measure student achievement. Good grades help students to get jobs and to get into university. I've spoken with a number of students who have jobs, and most of them say that they were hired primarily on the basis of their grades. My grades helped me land a part-time job and will help me get into university next year. I think grades are extremely important at Village High School.

34. Which of the following is NOT Magdalena Smith’s opinion?

A. Students may give up the chance to learn music and sports for grades.

B. Students’ creativity may not be developed for grades.

C. Grades should not be used to measure a person’s success.

D. Grades should be taken away at once.

35. We can learn Simon Harper ______________.

A. believes in the benefits of good grades

B. is concerned about students ’creativity

C. doesn’t work too hard at his studies

D. supports students' interests and abilities
