第三部分:阅读理解
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

For years, he had difficulty saving to buy a house because something would always happen and use more money. Although he made efforts, he simply could not go long before spending the extra money that he had saved.
Then one day a car accident badly damaged the car his wife was driving. The repairs might cost them five thousand dollars. Unfortunately, they were now in debt (债务) and so the car would have to wait. He realized that they needed a solution to their money problems. He worked long and hard for weeks, saving and managing his money in a way he had never done before. In a few months he had saved enough money to have his wife’s car repaired.
Once the car was repaired, he discussed with his wife how quickly they had put aside the money they needed. During their discussion his wife encouraged him to open a second account (账户) so they could continue to put away the same amount of money that they were saving every week for the car repair. This money would go towards the house they had always wanted to buy.
In a little over a year he saved more than twenty thousand dollars and was able to make the down payment (首付款). He did something in a short while that he had failed to achieve in his previous attempts.
This man’s experiences gave him a different feeling about money. He and his wife have continued to keep their second account. This time they have decided to start saving for their retirement, putting away just a little less every week than they did for their house.
One man developed a new set of good qualities because he had a goal that was important for him to achieve — he made a plan to achieve it and followed through. The experience of a single bad luck taught him a valuable lesson and challenged him to plan his saving, and spending habits again. In the process he also changed his family’s life. He now enjoys the material benefits (好处) along with a sense of success and pride.
56. What trouble did the writer have at first?
A. He couldn’t buy a new car for his wife.
B. The money he made couldn’t meet the needs in life.
C. His wife was seriously injured in a car accident.
D. He couldn’t save enough money to repair the dam-aged car.
57. After the car was repaired, what advice did the man’s wife give him?
A. He should work longer and harder than ever.

C. He should change his habit of making money.
D. He should save some money every week for the house.
58. What is the main idea of this passage?

B. One dollar saved is one dollar earned.
C. A good living habit leads to success.
D. Bad luck sometimes means a chance in life.

What is the hottest topic at your school? In Hangzhou Yongjin Middle School, it’s money. The school ran an activity called “making a living” recently. About 800 Junior 1 and Junior 2 students were divided into 112 teams. They went out to make money by selling things.
What did they choose to sell? Some sold newspapers; some chose bottled water; some sold environmentally friendly shopping bags and bamboo baskets.
Hu Qi’s team decided to sell educational books in front of the Children Activity Center. There are always many parents around there and they thought parents would like to spend money for their children, especially on books. But unfortunately, they came across urban management officers (城管). The officers asked them to leave.
“We played hide-and-seek (捉迷藏) with the officers for the whole morning” said Hu. “Finally we gave up and moved to other places.”
Wang Yongyi and her team sold ice cream in a square. They didn’t meet any officers. But few people were interest-ed in what they were selling.
The team then put up a board saying the money was to help the “Project Hope” for country kids. It worked. More people came to their stall (小摊). A foreigner even gave them 100 yuan. “He didn’t want any change. He said he wanted to help the children,” said Wang. “We were touched.”
They gave the 100 yuan to the “Project Hope” office later that day.
Meng Zhaoxiang and his team were luckier. They sold all their cakes in four hours, spending 39.5 yuan and getting back 80 yuan.
“It was not easy to make the money,” said Meng. “Some people just looked. Others just tasted but didn’t buy.”
Now I know how hard it is for our parents to earn the money we need to lead happy lives.”

Have you ever set a goal for yourself, like getting fit or being picked for a team? Like lots of people, maybe you started out doing great, but then lost some of that drive and had trouble getting motivated (激励) again. Everyone struggles with staying motivated and reaching their goals. Just look at how many people go on diets, lose weight, and then gain it back again!
Check in with your goal.
It helps if you write down your small goals in the same way you wrote down your big goal. That way you can follow what you need to do, check off tasks as you finish them, and enjoy knowing that you’re moving toward your big goal. If you’re feeling weak on willpower, you can look at your list to help you change!
Go on with your goal if you slip up (出差错).
If you slip up, don’t give up. Forgive yourself and make a plan for getting back on road. Pat yourself on the back for everything you did right. Don’t beat yourself up, no matter how far off track you get. Most people slip up when trying to make a change — it’s a natural part of the process.
Share with a friend.
Another way is having supportive people around you. Having a goal partner can make all the difference in times when you don’t feel motivated. If you’re not getting support from someone when you really need it, you may need to take a break from that friendship and make friends with people who want to help you succeed.
Don’t give up!
Ending an unhealthy behavior or creating a new, exciting one is all about taking responsibility (责任) for our lives. Finding the motivation to do it isn’t easy, but it is always possible. You can stay motivated by writing down your goals, sticking to your plan, and reminding yourself of what led you to set your goal in the first place. Change is exciting — we’d all be very bored without it.
Good luck in reaching your goals!

Often considered as “The Lost City of the Incas”, Machu Picchu is probably the most familiar symbol of the Inca Empire (印加帝国). It was built around the year 1450, but abandoned (遗弃) a hundred years later, at the time of the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire. Forgotten for centuries, the site was brought to worldwide attention in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, an American historian. Since then, Machu Picchu has become an important tourist attraction. It was announced a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. It is also one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. But it has recently come to light that the site may have been discovered and robbed secretly as early as in 1867 by a Ger-man businessman, Augusto Berns.
7,000 feet above sea level and located on a small hilltop between the Andean Mountain Range, the majestic city rises above the Urabamba Valley below. Separated into three areas — farming, urban, and religious (宗教的) — the structures are arranged so that the function (功能) of the buildings matches the form of their surroundings. The agri-cultural terracing and ditches (梯田和沟渠) take advantage of the natural slopes (斜坡); the lower areas contain buildings occupied by farmers and teachers, and the most important religious areas are located at the crest of the hill, over-looking the fresh green Urabamba Valley thousands of feet below.
Hikers, tourists, and the early explorers describe similar emotions as they climb their way through the Inca Trail. Many call the experience magical and say the area creates a wonderful green paradise, making it a must for anyone who travels to Peru.

“Just five more minutes.” “I’m tired!” “I can’t get up.” If you have ever had trouble getting up in the morning, you are not alone. Many kids in the United States do not get enough sleep.
Your body needs sleep and lots of it! “Evidence shows that elementary-age children need at least nine hours of sleep per night,” said sleep expert Dr. Carl Hunt.
Kids who do not sleep enough cannot do their best, experts say. A tired kid may be moody and act badly. Being tired can also cause kids to forget things, have trouble learning, and have trouble playing sports.
Not sleeping enough can also affect kids’ safety. Experts say children who are tired are more likely to suffer in-juries.
Lots of kids lose sleep because they are busy. Many take part in after-school activities. Then they go home, eat dinner, and do homework. Afterward, many kids watch TV, play video games, and surf the Internet. That leaves less time for sleep.
Sometimes you may not be able to go to bed early. But, if you get a choice whether to stay up late, think twice. A good night’s sleep can help you feel your best!
