A:Icon Painting with Peter Murphy
Peter will teach traditional Byzantine(拜占庭式的)icon painting techniques and early Italian panel painting techniques, which includes the use of gold leaf for backgrounds. To ensure that students receive individual attention, this course will be strictly limited to ten participants. The course fee includes tuition, materials for your own first icon and a daily lunch which weather permitting may be taken in the garden. Participants may wish to bring their own fine brushes if they have them. Please be on time for the first talk on Friday morning.

B:Special Topics in Painting: Advanced
For centuries, artists or writers have been coming to Florence to learn from its rich artistic heritage as well as explore the city’s exciting present. Studying in Florence today links you with this great tradition, raising questions about art and creativity that can be challenging. After a series of technical exercises, in this course students will develop their creative thinking. A course fee will cover the cost of models, day trips in Florence. Students will also travel to Venice with an additional fee of $130. The only condition is that you should have learned intermediate(中级的) painting for 2 semesters.

C:Chinese Painting and Calligraphy (书法)
In this course you will gain an insight into the ancient art of Chinese calligraphy and water ink painting. Starting with picotgrams (图画文字), you’ll learn 8 basic skills and how to write your name in Chinese characters. Explore different categories of Chinese painting and the basic techniques to produce your own painting.
Starter equipment (brush, ink stone or rice paper) is available from your teacher for $15 per day. This course starts on Sunday, 29th October 2006, 10:00am-3:00pm

D:Basic Chinese I
It is an intensive introduction to mandarin Chinese (standard) with the pin-yin pronunciation system, emphasizing speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The class will also provide techniques in recognizing and memorizing characters, as well as a crash course (速成班) on Chinese history and culture. This course will be offered in every spring.
E:The Book in an Edition
Producing books in editions is difficult and challenging work. Students will create content of their choosing, then edit, design, and produce their own books in small editions. We will focus on the interdependence of form and content through studio work, readings, and the examination of historical and contemporary models while we explore contemporary publishing practice. Especially it is suitable for students in creative and performing arts and those who are interested in publication.
