I’m Cathy Brown. I am now working for the Sunshine Travel Service in Changsha. I have just come back from Taiwan, the biggest island of China. It is in the Pacific Ocean(太平洋) to the east of Fujian.

Last week, I took a group of French holiday-makers for a week’s trip to Taiwan. We traveled all around the island. There are a lot of places of interest. My favorite is Sun Moon Lake. You may ask why people call it so. If you fly high up over the lake and look down from your plane, you will find the answer yourself. In the middle of this lake, there is a small island that is called Pearl Island because it looks like a pearl. On one side of Pearl Island the lake looks like a sun, and on the other side it looks like a moon. That is why people call it the Sun Moon Lake.

There are many mountains around this lake. One of the nearest is Mount Ali. We stayed there for three days. We also had a dancing party with Gaoshan people. On our first day there we went to the mountain and watched the sun going down slowly in the west. On our last day we got up early and saw the beautiful sunrise(日出).

Taiwan is a wonderful place which is known for beautiful scenery.

The City on the Sea

A city without cars would be very strange, right? Venice is such a city.

Venice is in the northeast of Italy. It isn’t built on land, like Beijing or Shanghai, but on more than 110 islands. Seawater is everywhere around the city.

Even so, travel isn’t difficult. The waterways have always been the best way to get around. There are 117 waterways and more than 400 bridges that can take you where you want to go.

People in Venice move from place to place by boat. They like to enjoy cool summer nights while taking boat trips. They talk to other people as they go along.

Venice grew out of small islands in saltwater lakes when some Italians escaped from a war more than 1,500 years ago, and built homes there.

Water makes the city special, but it is also a big problem.

Once, people used too much underground water. This made the city get lower, little by little. Now the city has gone down by 23 centimetres.

Every year, high waters hit the city in autumn and winter. When a lot of water comes, more than half of the city is under water.

Another problem is the rising seawater. The temperature has risen over the years. This has made arctic(北极的) ice melt(融化).

Scientists are trying different ways to stop the city from getting even lower.

Pingyao is one of China’s three protected ancient cities (the other two are Xi’an and Jingzhou). Lying in the middle of Shanxi Province, 90 kilometers south of Taiyuan, Pingyao ancient city used to be about two hours’ drive from the capital of Shanxi Province, but now the distance is only one hour and ten minutes’ drive after the highway was built. With a history of over 2,700 years, the ancient city stands out as one of the best protected of all the walled cities in China.

On December 3rd, 1997, UNESCO (联合国教科文组织) added Pingyao to the World Heritage (遗产) List as a world’s culture heritage. According to the UNESCO World Heritage Commission(委员会)， the Pingyao ancient city is a wonderful example of the Chinese Han cities during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
