When a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. Its tail moves up and down as it runs. When other rabbits see it, they run too. They know that there is danger.

When a bee has found some food, it goes back to its home and does a little dance in the air. This tells the other bees where the food is.

Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for instance, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs(呜呜叫) when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning.

But human beings are different from animals. We are able to give each other information, to tell other people what is in our mind or how we feel. By writing words down we can help ourselves to remember what has happened. No animal can do this. No animal has the great power of language.

People living in different countries made different kinds of languages. Today there are about fifteen hundred different languages in the world. A very large English dictionary, for example, has four or five hundred thousand words. But we do not know all these. The words we know are called vocabulary. We should try to make our vocabulary larger. Read as many books as possible. When we meet a new word, look it up in the dictionary. The dictionary is the most useful book.

I started school when I was five. I started to study at this school when I was eleven and I will leave next year when I am sixteen. So I will spend 5 years at this school.

The school year starts in September and ends in July. I have a two-week holiday in December , a two-week holiday in April and a six-week holiday in July and August. I also have a one-week holiday in February.

In June next year, before I leave this school, I will take exams in 10 subjects. The exams are called GCSE. All the children in England have to study English, Maths, Science and a foreign language. They can also choose some other subjects.
