A total of 3 billion HK dollars newly issued by the Bank of China represents about 4 per cent of the total HK dollar notes then in circulation. The new HK dollars are in five denominations: 1000,500,100,50 and 20. The sizes and colour schemes of the notes are consistent with those currently issued by the other two banks. The only difference is that the designs of the notes comprise local landmarks symbolic of the contemporary elements of Hong Kong and such floral patterns as bauhinia, peony, lotus, chrysanthemum and narcissus. A few security features to prevent counterfeiting have also been added to the notes. In addition, there are elegantly minted and uniquely shaped coins in smaller denominations: 10,5,2,1,50 cents, 20 cents and 10 cents.
