World Bank cuts China growth forecast

The World Bank has cut its forecast for growth in China’seconomy this year to 7.7 per cent, a sharp downgrade from theprediction of 8.2 per cent growth it made in May.

In a report on economies in East Asia and the Pacific published on Monday the global lender saidthere were concerns that China could slow further although it said the risk of a “hard landing” collapse remained small.

“China’s slowdown this year has been significant, and some fear it could still accelerate,” the reportsaid. “The risk remains of a more pronounced slowdown in China than currently expected.”

China’s gross domestic product grew 9.3 per cent in 2011 from a year earlier but thanks to weakexports and lower investment growth the pace slackened to 7.6 per cent in the second quarterfrom the same period a year earlier.

The deceleration has been caused partly by government efforts to rein in inflation and take someair out of a nationwide property bubble and partly by slumping growth in exports to key marketssuch as Europe and the US.

The rest of the region, which increasingly relies on China as its main engine of growth, has alsobeen hit by falling exports and the World Bank predicts growth this year for developing East Asiaand the Pacific will be 7.2 per cent, down from 8.2 per cent last year.

South-east Asian countries such as Thailand, Myanmar and the Philippines, and Pacific islandnations such as Fiji and Papua New Guinea, are covered in the report, which does not look at richerAsian countries such as Japan, Singapore or South Korea.

Thanks largely to the rapid growth in China, “the East Asia and Pacific region’s share in the globaleconomy has tripled in the last two decades, from 6 per cent to almost 18 per cent today, whichunderscores the critical importance of this region’s continued growth for the rest of the world,” said Jim Yong Kim, World Bank group president.

China’s economy will remain weak in the coming months and the chances of a major new stimuluspackage are small, the report concluded.

But it also noted that growth could rebound on the back of looser monetary policy andaccelerated central government approvals for investment projects, and it predicted that China’sgrowth would rebound in 2013 to 8.1 per cent.

For the wider region, growth is expected to recover to 7.6 per cent next year thanks to strongdomestic demand in countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, which are enjoying aboom in spending by governments and private companies.
