Nobel Peace Prize for European Union, Miredin Crisis
OSLO — The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded its 2012 peace prize on Friday to the 27-nation European Union, lauding its role over six decades in buildingpeace and reconciliation among enemies who fought Europe’s bloodiest wars, even as thecontinent wrestles with economic strife that threatens its cohesion and future.
The award surprised some who noted the deep strains between Germany and other Europeannations over Berlin’s insistence on austerity measures that have brought pain to many Europeans, particularly in Greece and Spain. Thousands of protesters turned out in Athens earlier this week todemonstrate against a visit by Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany.
But Thorbj rn Jagland, the chairman of the panel awarding the prize, said it was a signal from thecommittee concerning reconciliation in Europe and a message to the continent to carry on suchwork. Norway itself is not a member of the European Union and, therefore, Mr. Jagland said, somepeople in his country are not aware of the role played by the European Union.
The announcement came against a global backdrop of conflict, with civil war in Syria threateningto spill across the region, the Afghanistan war grinding into a second decade and earlier hopes of anew era of tranquillity in the Middle East largely abandoned.
Mr. Jagland said the award recognized the union’s historical role binding France and Germanytogether after World War II and its perceived impact in spreading reconciliation and democracybeyond the Iron Curtain that once divided Europe and to the Balkans. “The stabilizing part playedby the E. U. has helped to transform most of Europe from a continent of war to a continent ofpeace,” he said.
“The union and its forerunners have for over six decades contributed to the advancement ofpeace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe,” Mr. Jagland said.
Mr. Jagland was asked whether it had been a terrible year for the European Union. He replied: “Wewant to focus on what has been achieved in Europe in terms of peace and reconciliation and wewant to remind us all what can happen if disintegration starts and if we let extremism andnationalism start growing again in Europe. So this is in a way a message to Europe that we shoulddo everything we can to secure what we have achieved and move forward.”
“The E.U. is currently undergoing grave economic difficulties and considerable social unrest," hesaid. "The Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to focus on what it sees as the E.U.’s mostimportant result: the successful struggle for peace and reconciliation and for democracy andhuman rights.”
José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, said the award proved that theEuropean body was “something very precious” for Europeans and was “an inspiration.”
