Army soldiers fired tear gas and shots into the air to stopprotesters from storming the prime minister's office here onSunday, as Lebanon's opposition pressed for the governmentto resign over the killing of the country's intelligence chief in acar bombing.
The mayhem came during a political rally called the same day asthe funeral of Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan , a Sunni Muslim who headed intelligence for Lebanon'spolice force until he was killed in Friday's bombing. Many top Lebanese opposition figures blamedhis death on Syria's regime next door, fanning anger at Hezbollah, the Damascus ally which leadsthe government here.
New accusations emerged Sunday of Syrian involvement in the bombing, which shattered years ofcalm in the country, offering a tense backdrop to the funeral procession held for Gen. Hassan, whohad often checked Syria's influence in Lebanon.
'We are headed to confrontation,' said Ahmad Fatfat, a member of parliament with the anti-Syrianopposition coalition known as March 14, which called for Sunday's rally.
Syria's opponents accuse Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of trying to wreak instability in Lebanonto detract international attention from his crackdown on the political rebellion at home.
Mr. Fatfat said in a telephone interview Saturday that he and two other anti-Syrian politiciansreceived threats by text message before and after Friday's bombing. The politicians say thissupports allegations that Gen. Hassan's death is part of a campaign against Lebanese politicianswho oppose Syria's regime.
France's foreign minister Laurent Fabius on Sunday said Mr. Assad was 'probably' behind the bombblast that killed Gen. Hassan and several others. 'We don't know who is behind it,' he told aEuropean radio station, 'but everything suggests that it is the extension of the Syrian tragedy…. which makes Bashar al-Assad's departure even more necessary.'
