Bycontrast,thecurvatureofcucumbershasbeenapreoccupationofEuropeanofficials.CommissionRegulation(EEC)No1677/88statesthatClassIand"Extraclass"cucumbersareallowedabendof10millimetersper10centimetersoflength.ClassIIcucumberscanbendtwiceasmuch.
Italsosayscucumbersmustbefreshinappearance,firm,cleanandpracticallyfreeofanyvisibleforeignmatterorpests,freeofbittertasteandofanyforeignsmell.
Suchrestrictionswilldisappearnextyear,andabout100pagesofrulesandregulationswillgoaswell,amovewelcomedbyNeilParish,chairmanoftheEuropeanParliament’sagriculturecommittee.
