Adults are getting smarterabout how smartbabies are. Not long ago, researchers learned that 4-day-oldcould understand addition andsubtraction. Now, British researchpsychologistGraham Schafer has discovered thatinfants can learn words for uncommon thingslong before they can speak. He found that 9-month old infants could be taught, throughrepeated show-and-tell, to recognize the names ofobjects that were foreign tothem, a result that challenges in some ways the received wisdomthat, apartfrom learning to identify things common to their daily lives, children don’tbegin tobuild vocabulary until well into their second year.
"It’s no secretthat children learn words, but the words they tend to know are words linkedto specificsituations in the home,” explains Schafer. "This is the firstdemonstration that we canchoose what words the children will learn and thatthey can respond to them with an unfamiliarvoice giving instructions in anunfamiliar setting. Figuring out how humans acquire languagemay shed light onwhy some children learn to read and write later than others, Schafer says,andcould lead to better treatments for developmental problems. What's more, thestudy oflanguage acquisition offers direct insight into how humans learn.“Language is a test case forhuman cognitive development,” says Schafer. Butparents eager to teach their infants shouldtake note even without being taughtnew words, a control group caught up with the otherinfants within a fewmonths. "This is not about advancing development," he says. ‘‘It’sjust aboutwhat children can do at an earlier age than what educators haveoften thought."
