More than50 years ago, the United Nations declared that literacy is a basic human right.It'svery important for improving the lives of individuals. However, (20) i isestimated that 880 millionadults around the world are illiterate, that is, theyare unable to read or write. (20)A majorityof them are women. More than 110 millionschool age children in the world do not attend school.Many others completeschool or fail to finish their studies without learning to read or write.Manycountries depend on the efforts of people who offer their time to helpilliterate individuals.For example, John Mogger became concerned about theproblem of illiteracy three year ago,so he started teaching five prisoners inBrazil. In his teaching, he developed system with thisgroup of prisoners.(22)He says his way of teaching can help anyone learn how to read andwritewith about 30 hours of study. To learn his system, people must first know howto writeletters of the alphabet and learn which sounds they represent. (21)Thesystem divides lettersinto three groups. The first group of letters can bewritten between two lines. The second canbe written between two lines but partof the letters is above the top line.
