Nowadays, pollution is becoming worse and worse. A starry night seems to be a luxury(奢求)for people living in cities. Is there any ideal place for stargazers(观星者)? A small town in New Zealand is here to surprise you with its breathtaking starry night sky.
Lake Tekapo is located at the heart of New Zealand’s South Island. It has been a popular tourist destination for stargazers. At night, innumerable stars dot the sky above the small town. The Milky Way and various constellations(星座)can be clearly seen. Visitors can also watch meteors(流星)shooting across the sky. For people living in big cities, these can only be seen in movies or fairytales.
Though stargazing is common for people in Lake Tekapo, the local people have paid great attention to protecting their starry night sky. After midnight, all landscape lights must be turned off. In 2005, Lake Tekapo’s starry night sky was even listed as a world heritage(遗产).
Besides its starry sky, the town has many other things to offer. One of them is the flower, Russell Lupin. Every summer, Russell Lupins make Lake Tekapo more attractive. However, once the Russell Lupins die off, the banks of Lake Tekapo look bare.

Celebrating soccer
THIS summer is exciting for many people on the planet--- the World Cup take是 place in Brazil from June 12 to July 13. Among the world’s most widely watched sporting events, the World Cup makes the world turn around a moving ball. Many businesses, including banks and shops in some countries, change their hours according to the games so that people don’t miss any of the action.
But why is this sporting event so popular? Soccer can be played by anybody almost anywhere, without too much and expensive equipment. The universal attraction of the sport is down to being simple, according to Kevin Alavy from a sports research organization.
FIFA(国际足联), which has organized the World Cup since 1930, has helped make the event more popular. FIFA makes a habit of taking the World Cup to many new markets, such as South Korea and Japan in 2002 and South Africa in 2010. This has expanded the sport’s reach beyond Europe and South America, according to CNN. Brazil is seen by many as the home of soccer, so it is a bit surprising that this is just the second time that the World Cup is held in the country after the fourth one was held there back in 1950.
Soccer writer Jonsthan Wilson believes that the challenge of achieving success at the World Cup has also increased its magical attraction. Although FIFA has more than 200 member states --- it’s an organization with more members than the United Nations --- only eight countries have ever won the competition. These countries are Brazil (five wins), Italy and Germany (four each); Uruguay and Argentina (twice each); and England, France and Spain (once each).
The 2014 World Cup has seen different teams compete in 12 different cities, more than any other Cup on record. Spreading from south to north, some cities have different scenes, which surely make the World Cup more inspiring.
15. In the first paragraph, the underlined sentence probably means ______.
A. both the world and soccer turn in the same way
B. the World Cup is always changing like a moving ball
C. the World Cup has brought a lot of trouble for banks and shops
D. many people’s life centers around soccer during the World Cup
16. We can learn from the passage that FIFA ______.
A. has almost 200 member states
B. has always tried to make soccer more popular worldwide
C. has organized the World Cup since 1920
D. has almost the same members as the United Nations
17. In which year did Brazil host the World Cup for the first time?
A. 1930 B. 1950 C. 2002 D. 2010
18. According to the passage, the World Cup is attractive for the following reasons EXCEPT that ______.
A. the event is full of top athletes that are fun to watch
B. soccer is a simple sport that suits everyone to take part in
C. achieving success is a great challenge for all the teams
D. very few countries have ever won the World Cup

College is a lifetime investment (投资) — the gift of a college education can open the door to a world of opportunity for your child or grandchild. Savings(储蓄), even not so many at a time, can make a big difference.
With the cost of a college education continuing to rise, the key is to start saving early and regularly. By saving a set amount at set times, your money can grow as your child does. According to the College Board, the average cost for four-year public colleges has increased by nearly 51% over the last 10 years and these costs will almost certainly continue to rise. Saving for college can help with the increasing cost of a college education and help you be well prepared when your child is ready for college.
Saving for your child’s college education is an investment in their future. The savings you make today will pay off in increased earnings in the future. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, college graduates earn an average of $1 million more than high school graduates during their careers. The value of your investment in a college education will continue to grow for a lifetime.
Set your college saving goals realistically. You may not be able to save enough for all four years’ fees, but you could save enough to give your child the right start.
More and more families depend on student loans(贷款) to pay for college. By saving for college, families will have less burden of paying off loans and help their children leave school without worrying about paying off loans.
19. From the second paragraph we can learn that_______________.
A. the College Board increased public college costs
B. public college costs will increase by 51% in the next ten years
C. saving can help deal with the rising cost of college education
D. it’s not too late to start saving when your child is ready for college
20. Savings for college education _____________.
A. make one earn a lot
B. will increase in the value in the future

Keep Calm during the Hard Times
When life gets hard, sometimes it’s not easy to control yourself and not to sink deep into the bad feelings. Have you ever wondered how some people can be so calm during the hard times? 26 Here are 4 things you can do to get through hard times.
Cry if you need to --- for a while
Some people like to control themselves. 27 If you do control them, it’s like holding a ball under the water. You can do it for a while, but it will finally come back to the surface. So have a good cry once in a while to help you think more clearly.
28
Lost in the bad emotions, we won’t change anything. Let’s say you just lost your job. Maybe it was a shock. After crying, then you should make the decision to put your calm hat on. Start to find new jobs. Then do something.
Ask for help
Unluckily, a lot of people think that asking for help is a sign of weakness. It’s not! 29 Nowhere! Having other people support you will make you feel like you have more power than before.
Believe that things will get better.
If you don’t believe that things will change, then they won’t. I always love Henry Ford’s words, “Whether you think you can --- or you think you can’t --- either way, you are right.” If you think things will get better, then they finally will. If you think they won’t, then they won’t. 30
Stay calm when life gets hard. If you practice these steps on a regular basis, sooner or later it will become second nature to you.
A. Your beliefs shape your experience.
B. Remember that it won’t last forever.
C. Find the solution.
D. Would you like to use some ways that keep you calm during hard times?
E. But controlling your feelings doesn’t always help.
F. Where has it ever been written that everyone needs to go through their problems alone?
G. Somewhere in the world, someone has it a lot worse than you do right at this moment.
