(C)
A pretty and quite successful actress was the star for a new musical show. Her home was in the countryside, but she did not want to go back there every night, so she bought an expensive house in the center of the city, got some beautiful furniture and got a man to paint the rooms in new colors.
It was very difficult to get tickets for her show, because everybody wanted to see it. So she decided to give the painter two of the best seats. She hoped that this would make him work better for her. He took the tickets without saying anything, and she heard no more about them until the end of the month, when she got the painter’s bill. At the bottom of it were these words: “ Four hours watching Miss Hall sing and dance: 3 pounds,” with this note: “After 5 p.m., I get 15 shillings (先令) an hour instead of 10 shillings.”
36. The actress bought a house in the center of the city because ______.
A. she liked to live in the busiest place
B. her home was far away from where she worked
C. she didn’t like to live in the country
D. she didn’t want to go back to her hometown any longer
37.The actress got the painter’s bill ________.
A. to ask to pay for his watching her show
B. to ask for the money of his painting work
C. in which he showed his thanks for the tickets

Do you know that there are actually people who have paid for a flight to the
moon? In the future, there will be a lot more opportunities to travel to faraway places than now… perhaps even as far as the moon. As people adventure further and further away and as
planes, trains, cars, and rocket ships become faster, is it safer to have these vehicles controlled by humans or by computers?
While many flights by plane are controlled automatically (自动) by machines, most
people today wouldn’t let their car drive itself. That’s because now the autopilot function on your car can only keep it on the same course you are traveling on. It won’t turn the car right or left. It won’t stop if an animal jumps in the way. However, cars today can sense when something is too close and warn the driver with flashing lights and alarms. Many cars also have
GPS(global positioning systems)that tell drivers which road to take and when to turn. These systems, unlike human drivers, never get lost. In the future, it is easy to believe that your car will
be better able to drive itself with the aid of computers that can determine the position of your car and the speed it should travel at.
In addition to computers being ‘smarter’ than people regarding the best way to go or knowing how close another vehicle is, computers don’t get sick, tired, or angry. This means they won’t make the same mistakes that people make when they are not having a good day. While responding with emotion is a good thing when choosing the best way to deal with a friend’s personal problem, it may not be such a good thing when deciding what to do at the wheel of a fast-moving vehicle.
So what are the disadvantages of autopilot systems? Maybe one disadvantage is that
a small computer problem could cause a serious accident. It could also be argued that in unexpected situations, computers might not be able to respond properly ; some decisions require human emotions. Another problem might be that if everything were controlled by computers or robots, people wouldn’t have any jobs.
38. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Development of Autopilot B. Technology of Future Travel
C. A New Driving System D. Computerized Cars
39. Which of the following is the disadvantage of an autopilot system?
A. It won’t make the same mistakes as people do.
B. It can point out the best route for the driver.
C. It might not respond properly to unexpected situations.
D. It does not have human emotions to influence its function.
40. If some falling rocks roll down toward your car, the autopilot on your
car will____________.
A. inform you of the danger B. turn the car right or left
C. do nothing about it D. stop the car

Flash Mob(快闪族): The Pop Culture
If you see a group of people dancing and singing on the street or in the railway station, you don’t need to feel surprised. They are a flash mob. Who are they? Are they mobs (暴民)? 41 Actually, a flash mob is a group of people who gather suddenly in a public place, do something unusual for a brief period of time, and then quickly separate.
A flash mob is usually organized with the help of the Internet or other digital communications networks. 42 At a predetermined time, they gather and perform some tasks such as exchanging books, coming together to look at the sky, waving their hands and yelling(a loud sharp cry) something at the top of their lungs for 30 seconds. Then, they quickly disappear
before the police can arrive.
Bill Wasik, senior editor of Harper’s Magazine, organized the first flash mob in Manhattan in May 2003 and the first successful flash mob gathered on June 3, 2003 at Macy’s department store. More than one hundred people stepped onto the ninth floor carpet department of Macy’s department store, gathering around an expensive carpet. Following this flash mob, about 200 people flooded the lounge( public sitting-room) of the Hyatt hotel and applauded for about fifteen seconds. 43
Flash mob gatherings can sometimes shock people. Such an activity might seem amusing, but it might also frighten people who are not aware of what is taking place. 44 They also have big economic potential(潜力), such as using flash mobs to advertise a product.
45 People use it to do many things. For example, in 2009, Michael Jackson’s fans took part in a flash mob to remember him. Hundreds of his fans gathered outside the railway station in Liverpool. They were singing and dancing Michael’s famous song “Beat It” together. And in another example, some people took part in a flash mob to tell more people not to use negative words.
Flash mobs give people from all walks of life an opportunity to come together to create a memory.
A.Don’t be confused by their name.
B.People are attracted by the silly and harmless activities.
C.The flash mob is now becoming more and more popular.
D.Using mobile phones, the flash mob can change their gathering place.
E.A later mob saw hundreds of people in Central Park making bird noises.
F.The messages may be forwarded to friends, who forward to more people.
G.Undoubtedly, flash mobs can serve as good political tools in any direction.
