Text 4

M: You are driving so fast. Please show me your driving license.

W: OK. Please wait a minute. Here you are.

Text 5

W: Are you OK, sir?

M: I’m OK. Are you hurt?

M: It’s just too slippery on the road.

Text 6

W: What is the weather like today?

M: It has stopped snowing, but there’s a bitter cold wind.

W: Look at the ice there hanging from the roof!

M: And the streets are covered with ice.

W: Do you happen to know what the temperature is today?

M: I missed today’s weather forecast over the radio.

W: It feels like 15 degrees below zero at least. I don’t mind the cold weather, but I do hate it when it gets slippery.

M: The ice will be soon thick enough for skating. I’m so fond of winter sports!

W: That’s fine! Let’s go skating together tomorrow!

Text 7

M: Do you have any direct flights to New Zealand?

W: Sorry, we don’t. But I think you can fly on Northwest 212 to Tokyo and then have a connecting flight on Japan Airline 123 to Auckland, New Zealand’s gateway city. And it is the most economical flight, just $580.

M: When does the Flight 212 leave?

W: At 11: 30 a. m. . By the way, it also makes a stop at Chicago.

M: How long will it stay at Chicago?

W: Less than one hour.

M: And how long do I have to stay in Tokyo for the connecting flight?

W: Not so lo ng, just one hour.

M: So the time for the whole journey is about. . .

W: About eleven hours.

M: Let me count. . . OK, it works out for my time schedule. Thanks a lot.

W: You are welcome.

Text 8

M: Father’s birthday is coming, but we still haven’t decided what to get him.

W: I know. It’s hard. What does he need?

M: Well, darling, the other day he said that he needed a car.

W: Yeah, right. Well, I think that’s a little beyond us.

M: Yeah, it’d be fun, but it’s just a little too expensive.

W: There’s the usual kind of thing, like a wallet or tie.

M: Oh, please, not for his sixtieth. I think we should get him something more expensive than that. I mean, we want to get something good, something. . .

W: Something unusual?

M: Yeah.

W: Well, how about a computer? We could get him a computer. That way we could keep in touch on email.

M: No, no, no. You know him. He says he’s too old to learn how to use a computer. He isn’t, of course, but I don’t think he’d ever use it.

W: What about a foot therapeutic instrument? I think it’s good for his health.

M: That’s a good idea.

Text 9

W: Hi, Mark, haven’t seen you for ages. How are you doing?

M: I’m busy with my experiments in the lab but after work I often play some sports.

W: Like what?

M: Like tennis, running and golf.

W: Golf? That’s my favorite game. How often do you play, Mark?

M: I usually play about once a month. What about you, Michelle?

W: I play every Sunday.

M: Even when it rains?

W: Yes, even when it rains. I never miss a game on Sunday.

M: Where do you play?

W: The Lawndale country club. Do you know it?

M: Yes. I was there once. You’re going to play next Sunday, I suppose.

W: Certainly, listen! Why don’t you join me? We can have a game.

M: I’d love to. What time shall we meet?

W: Let’s meet at the club house at 1: 30 in the afternoon.

Text 10

The religion of the ancient Egyptians was based on nature.  The sun, the wind and the animals which the Egyptians used on their land were all important in Egyptian religion. The chief god was Ra who represented the sun. But the Egyptians had many other gods, some of whom had the heads of animals. Bast was the goddess of love, and she had the head of a cat. The Egyptians also believed in another life in which the soul of a man could live on if the body was preserved in a special way.

The word “mummy” comes from an ancient Egyptian word meaning “tar”, and tar was one of the things which the ancient Egyptians used to preserve the body after death. The bodies were then wrapped in cloth, and dressed with jewels and necklaces. A mask was placed over the face of the dead person. And for the very important people, the mask was made of gold. The body of the dead person was buried together with things that the person had used during his life on earth, and things which he would need in the next life. Some of the tombs in which the bodies were kept were huge and beautiful structures. They were full of rare and expensive treasures.

【参考范文】

No one can ever achieve any success without failure as failure can usually help us learn what our strengths and weaknesses are.

When I was in Senior High School, most of my teachers and students thought it better to study science, saying that it promised a better future.  I tried to follow this trend despite the fact that I was not good at physics.  It was only two months later, when I failed an extremely important physics exam, that I realized my talent lay in subjects like Chinese, English as well as history.  I switched for arts immediately.

The following years witnessed my excellent school performance.  So failure is not as terrible as we have expected as long as we can learn something from it.
