Norman Cousins was a businessman from the United Stated who often traveled around the world on business. He enjoyed his work and traveling.
Then, after returning to the United Stated from a busy and tiring trip to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Mr. Cousins got sick. Because he had pushed his body to the limited of its strength on the trip, a chemical change began to take inside him. The material between his bones became weak. In less than one week after his return, he couldn’t stand. Every move that he made was painful. He was not able to sleep at night. The doctors told him that they didn’t know how to cure Mr. Cousins’ problem and he might never get over the illness. Mr. Cousins, however, refused to give up hope.
Mr. Cousins thought that unhappy thoughts were causing bad chemical changes in his body. He didn’t want to take medicine to cure himself. Instead, he felt that happy thoughts or laughter might cure his illness. He began to experiment on himself while still in the hospital by watching funny shows on TV. Mr. Cousins quickly found that 10 minutes of real laughter during the day gave him two hours of pain-free sleep at night.
Deciding that the doctors could not help him, Mr. Cousins left the hospital and checked into a hotel room where he could continue his experiments with laughter. For eight days, Mr. Cousins rested in the hotel room watching funny shows on TV, reading funny books, and sleeping whenever he felt tired. When they reached the ruins, the professor was amazed. “It seemed like an unbelievable dream,” he later wrote. “What could this place be?” The place was the forgotten city of Machu Picchu. For almost 100 years, Machu Picchu was a busy, peaceful place. But in 1532, the Inca people left. Machu Picchu, once a great city, was empty and forgotten for many centuries. A new TV series in England, Away from it all, has surprised everyone by becoming a huge success with young people across the country. Its success is surprising because the series is about the relaxing lifestyles of people who live in the country. There is none of the action that we usually see on TV today. There are also no stressful moments, busy offices or crowded cities. Away from it all is set in the peaceful English countryside and tells simple stories about people’s kindness.
The director of the TV series says that its success is a sign of teenagers suffering from stress. They say that watching Away from it all helps teenagers forget about the pressures of exams and homework, and the troubles that fill the world today. They also say that it’s a good sign of today’s young people switching to happier TV series as it shows they would like a happier and healthier world.
Although the series’ success might have a good side, many teachers and parents are worried, however. They say that some of their students and children are becoming couch potatoes and are using Away from it all as an excuse for not completing homework. Some children have even refused to learn for exams because they say that they can only achieve personal happiness by avoiding stressful situations completely.
And what do the experts say? Paula Ray, a doctor of education, says that TV can influence children’s lifestyles. But she says that if a child reacts strongly, it’s likely that there are other reasons for his change in behavior. To tell you the truth, I am not interested in owning a mobile phone except for use in an emergency, for ordinary mobile phone service is very expensive. How would I get help if I were in trouble or in danger? A good friend told me about a product she thought would settle my problem. It’s SOS phone --- a mobile phone service designed for emergency use.
With the touch of a button, the SOS phone will connect me to a roadside emergency service, a 911 service or a trained SOS operator, 24 hours a day. If I even need help, I know it’s just a phone call away.
By pressing the 4 “Tow” button, I’ll be connected with my emergency roadside service provider. Or, if I don’t have one, the SOS operator can suggest one to me and get in touch with them immediately.
The “911” button will connect me to 911 emergency service in my area, and best of all, the call is completely free!
If I just want to call home to tell my husband and children something necessary, I can. By pressing the “Call” button, I’ll reach an operator. When I ask the operator to call home, I will be connected automatically. And because the Call Center has my most 10 used numbers, I don’t even have to recite the number.
Unlike ordinary mobile phone plans, the SOS phone doesn’t have any minimum usage requirements or other promises that could change the price I expect to pay each month.
