Welcome to my Message Board!
Subject: Slimming down(缩编)classics?
Mr. Handsome
2011-6-14
6: 34 AM Orion Books, which decides there is a market in creating cut-down classics(经典著作), is slimming down some novels by such great writers as L. Tolstoy, M. Mitchell and C. Bronte. Now, each of them has been cut down to about 400 pages by cutting 30 to 40 pages percent of original, with words, sentences, paragraphs and, in a few cases, chapters removed. The first six shortened editions, all priced at £6.99 and advertised as great reads “in half the time”, will go on sale next month, with plans for 50 to 100 more to follow. The publishing house believes that modern readers will welcome the shorter versions.
Mr. Edwards
2011-6-14
9: 40 AM Well, I’m publisher of Orion Group. Thanks for your attention, Mr. Handsome.
I must say, the idea developed from a game of “shame” in my office. Each of us was required to confess(承认)to the most embarrassing blanks in his or her reading. I admitted that I had never read Anna Karenina and tried but failed to get through Gone with the Wind several times. One of my colleagues acknowledged skipping(跳读)Jane Eyre. We realized that life is too short to read all the books you want to and we never were going to read these ones.
As a leading publishing house, we are trying to make classics convenient for readers but it’s not as if we’re withdrawing the original versions. They are still there if you want to read them.
Ms. Weir

11:35 AM I’m director of the online book club www.lovereading.co.uk.
Mr. Edwards, I think your shortened edition is a breath of fresh air. I’m guilty of never having read Anna Karenina, because it’s just so long. I’d much rather read two 300-page books than one 600-page book. I am looking forward to more shortened classics!
Mr. Crockatt
2011-6-14
4:25 PM I’m from the London independent bookshop Corckatt & Powell.
In my opinion, the practice is completely ridiculous. How can you edit the classics? I’m afraid reading some of these books is hard work, and that is why you have to develop as a reader. If people don’t have time to read Anna Karenina, then fine. But don’t read a shortened version and kid yourself it’s the real thing.
43. According to the message board, Orion Books .
A. opposes the reading of original classics
B. is embarrassed for cutting down classics
C. thinks cut-down classics have a bright future
D. is cautions in its decision to cut down classics
44. In Mr. Edwards’ opinion, Orion Group is shortening classics to .
A. meet a large demand in the market B. make them easier to read
C. increase the sales of literary books D. compete with their original versions
45. By describing the shortened classics as “a breath of fresh air”, Ms. Weir .
A. speaks highly of the cut-down classics B. shows her love for original classics
C. feels guilty of not reading the classics D. disapprove of shortening the classics
46. Mr. Crockatt seems to imply that .
A. reading the classic works is a confusing attempt
B. shortening the classics does harm to the original
C. publishing the cut-down classics is a difficult job
D. editing the classic works satisfies children’s needs
47. How many classics are involved in the massage board?
A. Two. B. Five. C. Four. D. Three.

When milk arrived on the doorstep
When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.
Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note-“Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery”-and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear.
All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to out house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.
There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.
Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch (门廊). Every so often my son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.
48. Mr Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer____.
A. to show his magical power. B. to pay for the delivery
C. to satisfy his curiosity. D. to please his mother.
49. What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy’s house?
A. He wanted to have tea there.
B. He was a respectable person.
C. He was treated as a family member.
D. He was fully trusted by the family.
50. Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?
A. Nobody wants to be a milkman now.
B. It has been driven out of the market.
C. Its service is getting poor.
D. It is forbidden by law.
51. Why did the author bring back home an old milk box?
A. He missed the good old days.
B. He wanted to tell interesting stories.
C. He missed it for his milk bottles.
D. He planted flowers in it.

Dear Sally,
Now I’d like to tell you something about my part-time job this
summer vacation, of which I worked like a guide in a travel agency.
The work was interesting but tired. I think it was helpful to work this
holiday. It was the first time that I have earned money on my own.
I’ve come to understand how hard my parents work to support
for the family. I used to keep on ask them for money, but now I’ll never
waste money and learn to share worry with my parent. I've learnt how
to get along well with others. What's worse, I've gained some working
and social experience and I have learnt something can' t be learnt from
textbooks. All these will be good for my future. In a word, I had the
wonderful and valuable summer vacation.
Yours,
