You may know the English letters A, B and C. But do you know there are people called ABC? You may like eating bananas. But did you know there is a “banana person”? How strange! Are these people from “another Earth”? No. They are just Chinese people like you and me.

ABC means American-Born Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a “banana person”. A banana is yellow outside and white inside. So, when a person is a banana, he or she is white inside—thinking like a Westerner and yellow outside—looking like a Chinese.

Do you know why? Usually, ABCs know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them don’t speak Chinese.

But if ABCs cannot speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people? Yes, of course. They are Chinese. They are overseas (海外) Chinese. These people may be citizens(公民) of another country like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chinese blood. Their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair.

But th ey are not Chinese citizens. They are not the people of the People’s Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous scientist C.N. Yang(杨振宁). He got the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1957. The Chinese love him, but he is an American citizen.

Prison Break(《越狱》) is a huge hit thanks to its handsome star, Wentworth Miller. His character, Michael Scofield, is the engine that drives the show.

Having committed a crime to get into prison and broke out his innocent elder brother, Michael Scofield is one of the most interesting personalities on television today. Bu t what about the man behind the character?

Miller, 35, is a hard guy to figure out. He does not come from a normal background and has never lived his life in a typical way.

Miller didn't take a direct path to fame and fortune. He graduated from Princeton University in 1995, not with a degree in theatre or film, but in English.He didn't even act when he was in college. His only performance experience was in his university's singing group. Yet, at graduation Miller still decided to make the move to Hollywood.

Miller has always been different. Although he is American, he was born in Britain when his father was studying there. His family background is also a special mix of cultures.“My father is black and my mother is white. That means I have always been caught in the middle.I could be either one, which can make you feel out of place，”Miller says.

Following his unusual path, Miller did not start trying out for films and TV shows when he first got to Hollywood.Instead, he worked as a lowly production assistant, not what you would expect from a Princeton graduate. However, it all paid off for Miller in the end.

In 2002, Miller played a role in the drama Dinotopia.He starred as a thoughtful and shy man.Producers remembered his performance when they were casting Prison Break two years later. With a golden globe nomination(提名) and another season of Prison Break on his resume(履历), Miller seems ready to take over all of Hollywood.

The 16-year-old girl Jessica Watson is said to be the youngest person to sail non-stop alone around the world. But her record has been questioned because someone thought that she has not sailed far enough. She will also not be recognized by the World Speed Sailing Record Council, as it was too dangerous for someone under 18 years old.

Ms Watson sailed into Sydney port on Saturday, seven months after leaving on a hard voyage. Family, friends and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd have gathered to greet her. Thousands of well-wishers waited at the port and watched from boats as Ms Watson sailed her pink, 10m boat over the finishing line. Many more Australians watched the event broadcast live on television. Watson said she was just an “ordinary girl who believed in her dream”.

Watson traveled northeast through the South Pacific and across the equator (赤道), south to Cape Horn at the tip of South America, across the Atlantic Ocean to South Africa, through the Indian Ocean and around southern Australia. The route took her through some of the world’s most changeful waters, and she battled through huge storms and suffered seven accidents of her boat.

People around the world have followed Ms Watson’s adventures on her blog, which she has daily updated (更新). On her blog, she wrote down beautiful sunrise over seas, the excitement of meeting a blue whale and the bright, terrible sight of a shooting star flying across the night sky above her boat. Ms Watson has reportedly sold her story to a news company for $700,000. She is planning to write a book on her experience.

Schools in Japan reopened this week, more than a month after the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami hit. Japan has a year-round school year, with short holidays after each of the three terms. The next term was scheduled to start at many schools on April 8, but it was delayed because of the disaster.

Since the quake, many schools have served as housing for homeless residents. In fact, some students are living in their school gym and will go directly to class from there. Hard-hit areas such as Fukushima, Miyagi, and Iwate face additional problems. More than 200 schools in those areas were destroyed completely. As a result, classrooms that are still standing will be crowded with more students.

Japanese schools can only focus on the basic necessities, because resources are scarce. As such,the future of some school sports and after-school activities seems uncertain.

Schools are guiding students through this difficult time. Experts have been sent to areas that suffered the worst damage. They are training teachers to help kids cope with the recent trauma(精神创伤).

In Japan ,teachers play a large role in students’ lives. Many teachers set up temporary shelters after the earthquake. Hideki Toyohara, the head reacher at Okado Elementary School, led students to the second and third floors of the school. He and other teachers took care of students and neighbours for three days after they were left without food, electricity, or water.

Severa international organizations want to help kids start the new school term right off. Save the Children, World Vison, and UNICEF are filling backpacks with school supplies. Noriko Sato, an official at Save the Children, tells the Christian Science Monitor, “Everyone really looks forward to the first day of school. We want to make sure there ’s no gap in what kids have on that day.”
