I’m Tom, a British exchange student at Yucai High School. I am planning to take a six-day tour of Dali and Lijiang, Yunnan Province, starting from February 21.
I’d like to find an outgoing and enthusiastic companion from a Chinese high school, who has a good knowledge of Chinese culture, especially about Yunnan local minorities. Besides, it would be nice if you have some experience in traveling. Above all, your good command of English will make sure free communication between us can happen. I sincerely hope we can relax, enjoy ourselves, make friends as well as improve our cross-cultural communication skills during this experience.

Text 6
M: Mary, will you do me a favor?
W: What do you want me to do?
M: Will you call Mr. Roy? Tell him Wednesday’s meeting is canceled.
W: You mean tomorrow?
M: Yes, that’s right.
W: OK. I’ll see to it.
M: After that, can you come to my office? I want to talk about the report you handed in last Thursday.

W: Hello! Erik. Where are you from?
M: A small town just by the seaside in the Southeast of England. And where I live is about half an hour’s walk from the beach.
W: OK. What kind of place is your town?
M: It’s very very small. It’s normally really busy in the summer, when there are tourists coming from all over the UK. When the sun is shining you can go to the beach. It’s really good.
W: Yeah, sounds like a great place. How far is it from London?
M: Ah, it takes about one hour by car. But it will double the time if you ride a train.

W: I haven’t seen John for a week. What’s wrong with him?
M: Haven’t you heard that he quit his job?
W: No. How come?
M: He quit his job last week. Actually, he really loves working in this company, and he had thought a lot about it before his leaving.
W: He had been working here for twenty years.
M: But the boss has been finding fault with him recently.
W: I saw the boss hitting the ceiling and take 100 dollars from his salary just because he was late for 5 minutes.
M: He has landed a better job with a big company.
W: That’s a relief. John always helps me whenever I am in trouble.
M: Yeah, he also offers me a lot of help.
Text 9
M: Lucy, you’re back. What classes did you have?
W: Well, I had English from 9:00 to 10:30, art from 1:30 to 2:00, and math from 2:30 to 4:00.
M: What do you think of the teachers?
W: To be honest, I like all of them, except the math teacher. Though he must be quite young, he
seems like an old person. He’s so boring!
M: That’s too bad. How is your English teacher?
W: She is great. In today’s class, she gave us a lecture on how to be a good student. She told us
not to push ourselves hard for exams, and to pay more attention to communicating than memorizing.
M: Did she give you any homework?
W: Not today. She wanted us to relax tonight instead of doing homework.
M: No wonder you like the class so much.
Text 10
Before the 1850’s, the United States had a number of small colleges. They were small, church-connected institutions whose primary concern was to shape the moral character of their students.
Throughout Europe, institutions of higher learning had developed, bearing the ancient name of university. In Germany universities were concerned primarily with creating and spreading knowledge, not morals. Between mid-century and the end of the 1800’s, more than nine thousand young Americans, dissatisfied with their training at home, went to Germany for advanced study. Some of them return to become college presidents—Harvard, Yale, Columbia—and transform them into modern universities. The new presidents broke all ties with the churches. Professors were hired for their knowledge of a subject, not because they were of the proper faith and had a strong arm for managing students. The new principle was that a university was to create knowledge as well as pass it on.
