M:How about yesterday and the day before yesterday?

M:Just a mistake?Do you realize I’ve invited some important people for dinner? That mistake could make me lose an important business partner.

W:I’m sorry, sir.I suggest you call them and explain the problem.I’m sure you will find several other good restaurants around here.

M:I can’t get in touch with them now. They are probably on their way at this very moment.Surely you could fit one more table in.

W:Not unless you’d like me to put yours in the hall, sir.

M:Well,OK.That’s better than nothing.

M:Hmm.I stopped smoking last June. That was last year’s promise to myself.

W:So what do you want to do this year?

M:I want to start getting more exercises.I have to lose weight,so I’d like to join a health club.

W:I’d like to,too.Jeff told me he’d like to have a really nice vacation.

W:How did you hurt your head then?

M:As I was walking to the doctor’s,I passed some workers painting our building.A can of paint fell off one of their ladders right in front of me.I tried to get out of the way and hit my head against a window.

W:What a terrible morning!

M:Yes,but I finally made it to the clinic. The doctor told me to keep my arm clean and dry and to rest today.I’m feeling better now.

听第10段独白,回答第18至20题。

(Text 10)

John first entered high school four years ago,at the age of 16.He worked very hard and always got very good grades.Besides doing well in his lessons,he was very active in sports, getting up every morning to practice running;he never took the bus to school but always ran instead. He even won a silver medal in the 800meter race at the school sports meeting a year ago.As a reward, his parents bought him something that he had wanted to have for a long time—a computer.

Soon, things began to change. He stopped getting up early and never ran to school. His interest in sports suddenly disappeared.Sometimes he got up so late that he would miss the school bus and then miss school.

Soon his school work began to suffer. One night, quite late,John’s mother saw light on in his room. She went in and found John still awake, playing computer games. Finally the reason for John’s change was clear—ever since he had been given the computer,he had been staying up late every night to play games. His lack of sleep was having a terrible effect on his studies. His mom decided that this must be stopped. The next day she had a serious talk with John.Instead of taking away his computer, she told him he was old enough to learn how to control himself.

John had already begun to realize how serious the problem was,so when his mother spoke to him,he agreed to work on controlling himself. He was rather glad to know that his mother cared about him so much.
