第三部分 阅读理解(共二节,满分40分)

(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Recently I was asked “Are we anywhere near the day when you can climb into a car on Long Island, program it to take you to your niece’s house in Chicago, hit enter, and after the first hundred yards, once you hit a main road, the car takes over automatically and you just sit back and enjoy the ride?”

It is a question I worry. But I had to answer truthfully, “Absolutely. We are without a doubt near that day.” Look, we’re already doing it with airplanes.

Northrop Grumman’s Global Hawk takes off at an air base in the U.S., climbs to 50,000 feet, flies to Australia, and lands at an Australian air base, where there is a grandstand filled with military officials with no human pilot.

The necessary technology is already here. We have radar that can be tied to cruise (巡航)control and brakes, which automatically adjusts(调整)your speed based on following distance and preprogrammed settings. It’s still a little bit raw, but it does work great. The technology can allow cars and trucks to follow each other in very closely spaced roads.

GPS can also change speed with location. Let’s say you’re in a state with a 75-mph limit and you cross into a state with a 65-mph limit. GPS knows that and adjusts your speed accordingly.

It’s not out of the question to imagine that someday soon you’ll be able to start the car, make proper settings, then turn the front seats around and play cards and eat lunch as if you’re riding on a train. All in perfect comfort and safety, all the way to that niece’s place in Chicago.

If asked to estimate just how far time is, I’d say a working system is ten years out, practice maybe 20 years.

56. The purpose of the question asked in the first passage is ______.

A. to draw readers’ attention to his theory.

B. to introduce the topic to be discussed in the passage.

C. to describe the cars in the future.

D. to prove that his idea is right.

57. What’s the key technology to automatic car driving?

A. The technology of airplanes.

B. The technology to be developed in the future.

C. The technology of radar and GPS.

D. The technology of satellites.

58. What does the author think of the change in car driving?

A. It’s a terrible thing to come.

B. It’s a wonder to drive such a car.

C. It’s a pity to give up the skill of driving.

D. It is very likely to come true in the near future.

59. Which of the following may be the best title for this passage?

A. Driving is dead?        B. Cars in the future

C. New technology will change cars?     D. Comfortable car driving

How to Be a Winner

Sir Steven Redgrave

Winner of 5 Olympic Gold Medals

“In 1997 I was found to have developed diabetes(糖尿病) . Believing my career was over, I felt extremely low. Then one of the specialists said there was no reason why I should stop training and competing. That was it—the encouragement I needed. I could still be a winner if I believe in myself. I am not saying that it isn’t difficult sometimes. But I wanted to prove to myself that I wasn’t finished yet. Nothing is to stand in my way.”

Karen Pickering

Swimming World Champion

“I swim 4 hours a day, 6 days a week. I manage that sort of workload by putting it on top of my diary. This is the key to success—you can’t follow a career in any field without being well-organized. List what you believe you can achieve. Trust yourself, write down your goals for the day, however small they are, and you’ll be a step closer to achieving them.”

Kirsten Best

Poet & Writer

“When things are getting hard, a voice inside my head tells me that I can’t achieve something. Then, there are other distractions, such as family or hobbies. The key is to concentrate. When I feel tense, it helps a lot to repeat words such as ‘calm’, ‘peace’ or ‘focus’, either out loud or silently in my mind. It makes me feel more in control and increases my confidence. This is a habit that can become second nature quite easily and is a powerful psychological(心理的) tool.”

60. What does Sir Steven Redgrave mainly talk about?

A. Difficulties influenced his career.  B. He overcame the shadow of illness to win.

C. Training helped him defeat his disease.   D. Specialists offered him medical advice.

Why People Get Tattoos

Jack lay, quiet and unmoving, for thirty minutes while a stranger repeatedly stabbed (刺) him with sharp needles, causing blood to pour steadily out of his leg. Jack was getting a tattoo. His friend Tony had recently gotten a tattoo, and Jack was so impressed by Tony’s bravery and his tattoo that he decided to get one too. Peer pressure, media influence, and personal expression are some of the common reasons for wearing tattoos today.

The desire to be accepted by one’s friends or peers can have a great influence on what a person does. Sometimes, wearing a tattoo can be a sign that you belong to a certain group. Gangs often use special clothes and tattoos to identify their particular group. Some of these groups wear only brand-name clothes. Others wear tattoos. When a person’s friends are all doing something, that person is more likely to do the same thing.

The media is another big influence behind the popularity of tattoos in North America. A wide variety of media images (人物,图像) show tattoos—people appearing in commercials selling expensive cars, famous sports heroes with tattoos in magazines, fashion models wearing designer clothes that show their bodies tattooed with detailed and colourful patterns. These media images link tattoos to ideas of wealth, success, and status. As a result, many people decide to get a tattoo for its fashion and status value.

Many people decide to wear tattoos in order to express their artistic nature, their beliefs, or their feelings—in other words, to show their individuality (个性). A musician in a rock band may get a tattoo of a guitar on the arm. Some environmentalists may tattoo pictures of endangered animals on their shoulders. A tattoo can be a public sign to show what is important in a person’s life.

As you can see, there are many reasons why young North Americans get tattoos. A tattoo can be part of a group’s uniform, a sign of fashion, or an expression of individuality. The decision to get a tattoo is most often a result of the influence of friends or media or the desire to express oneself. For Jack, it was a mixture of all three.

64. Jack has got tattoos in order to ______.

A. show his great bravery              B. gain a special experience

C. be different from others         D. make himself more healthy

65. According to the passage, media images are linked to ______.

A. traditional lifestyle    B. social position C. cultural background    D. public interest

66. We can infer from the passage that ______.

A. some people get tattoos out of pressure     B. tattoo is related to religious belief

C. getting tattoos costs a lot of money        D. most people with tattoos are artists

67. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

CP: Central Point   P: Point   Sp: Sub-point (次要点)   C: Conclusion

D

Apparently, we are safe neither at home nor in the business office. We use water in both places, but the research shows that chemicals added to our local water supply to kill harmful bacteria can have unwanted side effects. These chemicals can cause potential harm through drinking and in seemingly harmless activities as cleaning one’s house. They are released (set free) from water by daily actions like water running out of tap, spraying from garden pipes, or splashing in dishwashers and washing machines. As the water is moving, these chemicals are released into the air and then breathed in. Once inside our bodies, they start to affect our health.

Does this mean we should stop bathing? No, say the scientists, but we should put all pollution into perspective. Activities at home such as the burning of coal, cooking oil, or even candles release carbon monoxide and particulates such as cigarette ashes which have been proven as harmful to health as working or living near heavy traffic. New rugs, bedding, and even clothing give off that “new smell,” which is a sure sign of chemicals. In the office, newly applied paint, newly purchased telephones and other telecommunications equipment, and computers release polluting chemicals, too. As offices and homes often have inadequate ventilation (通风), these chemicals can build up to become health problems. Their poisonous effects are only now being slowly recognized.

These facts suggest that, at a minimum, proper airing of newly purchased goods with an obvious chemical smell is a wise warning. Home and office windows should be opened during good weather. Even one’s car needs to be ventilated as well while in the garage.

We need further research to understand better other potential health dangers, too. For example, the effects of overcrowding of schools (carbon dioxide build-up), the factory work environment (an endless list of potentially dangerous substances), and even home heating and cooling (the air conditioner may be our enemies, not our friends) have only recently started to come to light. Until we understand the effects of our new technological environment better, we can only hope that “there is no place like home.”

68. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?

A. The air we breathe in is harmful.

B. The water in everyday use is unsafe.

C. Chemicals are added to the drinking water.

D. Chemicals are released in the running water.

69. In Paragraph 2, the underlined sentence means that _______.

A. bathing should be done with caution

B. homes and offices should be aired often

C. we should prevent any pollution from doing harm to us

D. any pollution should be taken into consideration

70. What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To call on us to guard our water.

B. To show us that no place is like home.

C. To make us aware of the pollution around us.

D. To argue that neither homes nor offices are safe.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项并写在第二卷答题区。选项中有两项多余选项。

Everyone knows that the Frenchmen are romantic, the Italians are fashionable and the Germans are serious. Are these just stereotypes or is there really such a thing as national character? And if there is, can it affect how a nation succeed or fail?

At least one group of people believes that it can. A recent survey of the top 500 entrepreneurs (企业家) in the UK found that 70% felt that their efforts were not appreciated by the British public. Britain is hostile (敌意的) to success, they said. It has a culture of jealousy.  71  Jealousy is sometimes known as the “green – eyed monster” and the UK is its home.

Scientists at Warwich University in the UK recently tested this idea. They gathered a group of people together and gave each an imaginary amount of money.  72 . Those given a little were given the chance to destroy the large amount of money given to others – but at the cost of losing their own. Two thirds of the people tested agreed to do this.

73  But there is also conflicting evidence. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development recently reported that the UK is now the world’s fourth largest economy. That is not bad for people who are supposed to hate success. People in the UK also work longer hours than anyone else in Europe. So the British people are not lazy, either.

“It is not really success that the British dislike,” says Carey Cooper, a professor of management at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. “It’s people using their success in a way that seems proud or unfair or which separates them from their roots.”

_74_ They set out to do things in their way. They work long hours. By their own efforts they become millionaires. _75_ It hardly seems worth following their example. If they were more friendly, people would like them more. And more people want to be like them.

A. This seems to prove that the entrepreneurs were right to complain.

B. The one who owns most money in the end is the winner.

C . As a result, the survey said, entrepreneurs were “unloved, unwanted and misunderstood.”

D. it is not true that British people are born jealous of others’ success.

E. Some were given a little, others a great deal.

F. But instead of being happy they complain that nobody loves them.

G. Perhaps it is the entrepreneurs who are the problem.
