Many of us enjoy doing it: you turn on the camera on your mobile phone and hold it at a high angle – making your eyes look bigger and your cheekbones more defined. You turn to your best side and click.
There it is – your selfie.
Over the past year, “selfie” has become a well-known term across the globe. This August the Oxford dictionary added the word to their online dictionary and defined it as: “A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smart phone or web cam and uploaded to a social media website.”
Today it’s not difficult to find social networking pages full of photos people have taken of themselves and their friends. And selfie culture has become especially relevant for young people. As many as 91 percent of teenagers have posted photos of themselves online, according to a recent survey by the US Pew Research Center.
So what are the reasons for the rise of selfie culture?
“The craziness about the selfie celebrates regular people,” Pamela Rutledge, a professor at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology, told Vogue magazine. “There are many more photographs available now of real people than models.”
Posting selfies also allows you to control your image online. “I like having the power to choose how I look, even if I’m making a funny face” Samantha Barks, 19, a high school student in the US, told Vogue.
In addition to self-expression and documentation (记录), selfies “allow for a close friendship for long-distance friends, because you can see each other’s faces every day”, wrote Casey Miller at The Huffington Post.
But US psychologist Jill Weber is concerned that selfies might lead to social problems. “There’s a danger that your self-esteem (自尊心) may start to be tied to the comments and ‘likes’ you get when you post a selfie, and they aren’t based on who you are – they’re based on what you look like,” Weber told Vogue. “When you get nothing or a negative response, your confidence can decrease.”
61. Why does the writer mention the fact that “selfie” was added to an online dictionary?
A. To inform readers where to find the meaning of the word.
B. To recommend the dictionary to readers.
C. To show that the online dictionary is widely used.
D. To indicate that the word has become very popular.
62. According to the passage, “selfie” mainly involves ______.
A. young people B. models C. students D. celebrities
63. How many reasons are mentioned for the rise of selfie?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
64. Many people post photos of themselves online to ______.
A. make fun of themselves B. become powerful
C. beautify themselves D. choose how they look
65. In Jill Weber’s opinion, selfies may cause one to ______.
A. be cheated B. feel discouraged
C. lose money D. succeed more easily

My friend BJ Gallagher told me a great story recently, about her own experience with resentment (愤恨). She once worked as the training manager for a large newspaper, where she found the corporate culture extremely frustrating. The company was a hundred years old and their past success had blinded them to the need for change. Finally, after butting heads with several senior executives many times, she left the company. But she found that she hadn’t left her resentment, frustration, and anger behind when she resigned.
“I finally decided to write about my experiences and my feelings at the newspaper. I wanted to be rid of that company and those people, once and for all. So I wrote and I wrote. It wasn’t just a story that poured out; it was a whole book! We called it A peacock in the Land of Penguins. I was the peacock and those newspaper executives were the penguins.”
“It took me several more years to finally get over my negative emotions. Through a lot of soul-searching and reflection, I finally was able to let go of my resentment. I came to see that there was nothing personal in the way they treated me, and they were good people doing what they thought best for the company. I was the one who had made it personal. I thought they were making my life miserable on purpose.”
“Finally, the time came when I decided to make amends (弥补) for the harsh, angry things I had said about the company. I invited my former boss to dinner and made my apology. It was a great healing process for me. I finally felt free of the resentment that had been eating me up.”
“What was the final outcome?” I asked her.
“Gratitude,” she replied. “Not only wasn’t I resentful any more, I was grateful to the company. If I hadn’t had those painful experiences, I would never have written a book. And the book became hugely successful – now published in 21 languages; it transformed my business.”
66. What made BJ Gallagher frustrated in the company?
A. Unfair treatment by the senior executives. B. The strict rules in the company.
C. The culture and tradition of the company. D. Her low position in the company.
67. Why did BJ Gallagher write about her experiences and feelings at the company?
