At 4:53 p.m. on January 12, United Nations aid worker Jens Kristensen was at his desk reading documents on the third floor of the Christopher Hotel, which served as UN headquarters in PortauPrince, when he felt a tremor. Four seconds later, the earthquake hit.
“In a split second, I considered whether to run for the door or hide under my desk,” says Kristensen, 48. “The door was closed, and I thought that maybe it was too far and I would be caught under falling debris, so I hid under the table.” A bookshelf topped onto his desk, protecting him from being crushed by rubble and trapping him in a tiny pocket. “I was confined as if in a small coffin,” he says. It was so dark, and it didn’t matter if his eyes were open or closed. He used the light from his mobile phone to see around him. He found, among other items, a jar of instant coffee. “I had no food or water, only the coffee to suck on if I needed it.”
At about 6:30 a.m. on January 17, an oil leak silenced the building’s generators, and Kristensen was able to hear muffled voices above where he was buried. “I thought, I was too tired to bang and shout. But then I realized, I had to take every chance. This could be one.” So he called out. Six hours later, Kristensen saw his rescuers’ faces. “It was so amazing. I felt I had received a second birthday,” he recalls. www.ks5u.com
Dehydration and pains but with only a bruise and a scratch, Kristensen took three days to recover. The UN lost more than 90 people in Haiti. Conventional wisdom says that hardship can make us old before our time. In fact, a new study suggests that violence not only leaves longterm scars on children’s bodies, but also changes their DNA, causing changes that are equal to seven to ten years of premature aging.
Scientists measured this by studying the ends of children’s chromosomes(染色体), called telomeres, says Idan Shalev, lead author of a study published in Molecular Psychiatry.
Telomeres are special DNA sequences which prevent the DNA in chromosomes from separating. They get shorter each time a cell divides, until a cell cannot divide any more and dies.
Several factors have been found to shorten telomeres, including smoking, radiation and psychological stresses such as being treated badly when young and taking care of a chronically ill person.
In this study, researchers examined whether exposure to violence could make children’s telomeres shorten faster than normal. They interviewed the mothers of 236 children at ages 5, 7 and 10, asking whether the youngsters had been exposed to domestic violence between the mother and her partner; physical maltreatment by an adult; or bullying. Researchers measured the children’s telomeres—in cells obtained by swabbing the insides of their cheeks—at ages 5 and 10.
Telomeres shortened faster in kids exposed to two or more types of violence, says Shalev. Unless that pattern changes, the study suggests, these kids could be expected to develop diseases of aging, such as heart attacks or memory loss, seven to 10 years earlier than their peers.
Shalev says there is hope for these kids. His study found that, in rare cases, telomeres can lengthen. Better nutrition, exercise and stress reduction are three things that may be able to lengthen telomeres, he says.
The study confirms a smallbutgrowing number of studies suggesting that early childhood adversity imprints itself in our chromosomes, says Charles Nelson, a professor of pediatrics and neuroscience at Harvard Medical School.
(C)66. The new study found that ________.
A. hardship has a longterm effect on a child’s mind
B. violence leaves scars on a child’s mind
C. violence can speed up a child’s aging
D. hardship can change a child’s aging

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.
The behaviour of ants has long fascinated scientists. And why not? These insects have the strength to carry food up to seven times their own body weight, and set up amazingly complex colonies. In recent years, scientists also have been paying greater attention to the way in which a colony of ants can solve complex problems.
Each insect in a colony seemed to have its own agenda, and yet the group as a whole appeared to be highly organized. This was most apparent in the way in which ants travel to and from a food source. Ants form and maintain a line to their food source by laying a trail of pheromone, a chemical to which other members of the same species are very sensitive. They deposit a certain amount of pheromone while walking, and each ant prefers to follow a direction where a lot of pheromone can be found. This enables the ant colony to quickly find the shortest route.
The social behaviour of ants is among the most complex in the insect world. They communicate by touch and smell, constantly touching each other to pass on their nest odour. There are also some fairly aggressive tendencies exhibited by many ants. For example, ants have the ability to take over the nest of other ant species. The queen will attack and kill the queen of other species, and then cover herself with the odour of the other queen so she will be accepted by the colony residents.
All ants have amazing design features. They have two sets of jaws—the outer pair is used for carrying objects and for digging, while the inner pair is used for chewing. Some ants can lift food items that are up to seven times as heavy as themselves. They control the population numbers of many other species. Ants can eat animals, plants, and even the seeds of many plants.
Actually, according to what scientists have investigated, ant’s highly complex social structure, life cycle, strength, are all said to be the result of evolution.

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.
John was waiting for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t, the girl with the rose. Thirteen months ago, in a Florida library he took a book off the shelf and found himself fascinated with the notes in the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind.
In front of the book, he discovered the previous owner’s name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort he located her address. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond.
During the next year and onemonth the two grew to know each other through the mail. A Romance was budding. John requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn’t matter what she looked like. Later they scheduled their first meeting—7:00 p.m. at Grand Central Station in New York.
“You’ll recognize me, ” she wrote, “by the red rose I’ll be wearing on my lapel.” So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for the girl with the red rose.
A young girl in a green suit was coming toward him, her figure was long and slim and her eyes were blue as flowers. Almost uncontrollably he made one step closer to her, and just at this moment he saw Hollis Maynell—a woman well past 40. The girl was walking quickly away. He felt as though he split in two, so keen was his desire to follow her, and yet so deep was his longing for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned him and upheld his own.
He did not hesitate. He squared his shoulders and said, “I’m John, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me; may I take you to dinner?”
The woman smiled, “I don’t know what this is about, son,” she answered, “but the young lady in the green suit begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should tell you that she is waiting for you in the restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!”
It’s not difficult to admire Miss Maynell’s wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in its response to the unattractive.

My Favorite Book
Reading books not only broadens our horizon, but also enriches our minds. Some books are to be overlooked, others are to be tasted, and some few to be chewed, digested all life long. So far, I have read numerous books, such as magazines, novels, story books and so on. Yet one of the books that I like best is My Life Story.
It was created in 1902 by an American writer—Helen Keller, a blind, deaf and dumb person. In the book, she wrote that she had not been able to see, hear or speak since the age of one year and seven months, which made her desperately sad. When she was seven years old, she knew Miss Sullivan, her private tutor. Helen was getting happier every day. Then, Miss Sullivan helped her learn how to write English words. At first, Miss Sullivan wrote some words on Helen's hands with her own fingers again and again. Helen tried as much as possible to remember words and her efforts paid off. After that, she wrote and published many famous works, among which is My Life Story. My Life Story described her hard struggle to become an outstanding writer and educationist across the world.
It shows us a universal truth: Nothing is difficult if you put your heart into it! This is why I like it best.

Conversation 1
M: Now Mrs Jones, have you been following the diet sheet I gave you?
W: Well, most of the time I have. But I do get really hungry late in the evening sometimes, and I just have to have an extra snack before bedtime.
M: Late night snacks, huh? And have you been exercising properly?
W: Well, I wanted to, but the weather's been so bad...
M: Mrs Jones, you're at least 40 kilos overweight. You must follow the diet sheet exactly every day. And you must try to exercise a little bit every day.
Conversation 2
W: Good morning.
M: Good morning. I'd like to join the school volunteer project.
W: What do you like doing?
M: I love writing stories. I can tell them stories. I'm sure children will love my stories and me.
W: I agree with you. Can you tell me your name, your class and telephone number?
M: Oh, sorry. I nearly forgot. I'm Jim Green and in Class 306. My telephone number is 8832765.
W: OK, I'll call you when it is ready.
M: Thanks a lot.
Conversation 3
W: Hey. Today's April 22nd.
M: Oh...Uh...yeah. Happy birthday!
W: No. It's not my birthday. It's Earth Day. It's a special day for everyone to think about what they can do to help protect the earth's environment.
M: Huh. So, what are you going to do to help the environment? Plant a tree?
W: I decided I'm going to start taking shorter showers to save water. And this morning I bought a bus pass, so I can start taking the bus to work instead of driving my car.
M: Great. I think I'll join you. So, where can I get a bus pass?
W: Just go over to the transportation office.
Conversation 4
W: I enjoy going through secondhand bookstores. Did you see this old book of children's stories?
M: Some of these books aren't so old. This novel was published only 6 years ago. It costs 75 cents.
W: Hey, look at this. Look at the signature. It's dated 1893. Maybe it's worth something.
M: Everything on that shelf is worth 50 cents.
W: But if this is the signature of someone who was wellknown, it might bring a lot more. The name looks like Harold Dodson, maybe. I'm going to buy this book and see if I can find a name like that in the library.
M: Good luck. Your book of plays may make you rich. But I'll bet my 75cent novel is a better buy.
Conversation 5
W: Hi. Haven't seen you for ages. Have you just returned from Australia?
M: Yes, from Brisbane.
W: How long were you there?
M: Nearly two months.
W: You like Brisbane?
M: Oh, yes. The city is beautiful, green and clean, like a big garden. People there are friendly.
W: Mm! What's the weather like there?
M: Well, it's pretty hot during December and January and cold during June and July. But basically, the weather is nice. It's really a good place!
W: So the seasons are all upside down for you over there! People can eat Christmas dinner in hot sunshine.
M: That's right! The best time to visit is during September and December. You'll find a lot of Australians go to the beach on Christmas Day for a barbecue!
Conversation 6
W: Well George, what do you plan to do this summer?
M: I'm going to teach English to some immigrants in the university's community service programme.
W: Sounds interesting. Don't you need to speak a foreign language for a job like that?
M: No. You just have to present the language and give the students a chance to practice speaking. My students won't need to read and write English, at least not now. They are more interested in the spoken language.
W: You sound pretty knowledgeable about that. How come you know so much?
M: I took a course in Teaching English as a Second Language last year, when I was in China. I think I would like to be an ESL teacher after I graduate.
