Since the 1990s, education has been required for all South Africans from age seven to fifteen. Last December, the government announced that seventy percent of students passed their final examination to finish high school. In 2008 the passage rate was about sixty-three percent. There have been increases each year since then.

Professor Shireen Motala at the University of Johannesburg says that access to basic education is no longer the problem in South Africa. She says most children stay in school until they are about sixteen. The problem now, she says, is that large numbers of them leave without completing high school.

Students take an examination known as the matric in grade twelve, their final or “matriculation” year. Professor Motala notes that less than half the children who started school in 2000 sat for the matric last year.

Educational researchers also point to another problem. They say South African schools do not produce enough students with the skills for higher education in math and science. Many schools are not well-equipped. They do not have libraries at school. Ninety-two percent of the schools do not have libraries.

Also, education specialists say, in many cases, teachers and school principals do not have the skills or training to do their jobs. In other cases, they are simply not doing their duty to provide an education.

Professor Motala says a number of teachers were poorly trained during the system of apartheid (种族隔离制度), or racial separation in South Africa. Apartheid ended in 1994.

Secondly, she says, teachers have been confused by the many educational reform efforts in the last fifteen years. And, finally, she thinks language differences in the classroom have not gotten as much attention as they should.

Sounds crazy? Fans across the UAE(阿联酋)are so excited as Justin Bieber is scheduled to perform at a stadium in Dubai on May 4. In less than 36 hours all the tickets available were sold out.

If you have a teenager lying under your roof, it’s likely that she has spent your hard-earned cash on some concert tickets. Clare Smart, a researcher on teenage development in Dubai, has some ideas about the pop phenomenon. “Justin Bieber is a teenager himself and therefore teenagers feel a connection to him, in the songs that he sings, his hairstyle and how he dresses… he represents what many teenagers would like for themselves, such as the latest clothing trends, exciting travel and high earnings. Besides, it gives teenagers the feeling of being part of a group and a shared experience with other teenagers who have the same interest in a particular celebrity…” says Smart.

It’s easy to be sheltering as a parent and it’s a good idea to talk to your teenagers about their idols, find out what they like about them and why. “You could accompany your teenagers to a concert or listen along to the latest song in the car with them,” suggests Smart. “This shows that you are interested in the things they consider to be important.”

Sometimes, however, a normal level of interest slips into an obsession (痴迷) and then it becomes a cause for concern. It is now considered a personality disorder, which is closely related to higher levels of depression, anxiety and stress. In practice, teenagers who are overly obsessed with stars often have damaged relationships with their parents.

The good news, however, is that there is plenty that parents can do to prevent their teenagers from becoming overly obsessed with those so called celebrities. Let them know what their real life is like behind the story, and they can see these celebrities in a new angle.

Common phrases like “ no pains, no gains” give the impression that we ought to be suffering while we study. It’s almost as though the only way to know if we’re putting in enough work is the sense of hardship we bear.

When we haven’t taken the time to come up with another idea, all we know how to do is shut ourselves in a room with a book. It’s no surprise that we find revision boring and difficult. Just as children learn from playing, we can learn from doing, or at least from study techniques that interest us, rather than make us switch off.

Shutting yourself away can make you learn to hate studying. This leads to a situation where instead of being able to concentrate on your work, you are troubled by how unfair it is that you must study.

When you hate your work it’s very difficult to make yourself star, or approach it with any kind of structure or enthusiasm. This can be part of a vicious cycle(恶性循环) that traps you into ineffective revision, your poor progress fuelling further annoyance.

Just being around other people really helps fight against feelings of loneliness and, thankfully, it’s perfectly possible to work in the company of other people. We just need to learn how to deal with distractions(使人分心的事物).

It’s not necessary to avoid all company, just idle(懒散的) company. Studying in the same room as someone who is ironing or working out is perfectly possible. People who are bored and looking to be distracted, however, are terrible to work around. They constantly try to keep others in conversation.

It’s also a good idea to avoid the company of people involved in activities that you would rather be doing than studying. Working while sitting next to someone playing video games is much more likely to end with a new high score than a productive few hours of revision.

If being around others means working in a noisy environment, a pair of headphones and some background music can block out even noisy children. They also act as a psychological barrier, so that people think twice before interrupting you.

When you’re studying for a big exam, it seems like your whole life is taken up with study. Friends and family can lessen feelings of isolation(孤立). And connecting with other people makes us happy, so it’s important not to give that up and to make sure that we take the time to socialize.

The world is moving so fast these days that if you do not have the right education, you could get left behind. Technology touches every part of our daily lives---even the fast food industry relies on computer assisted systems to speed things to their customers. If you cannot figure out the computer at your local fast food shop, where will that leave you?

Once upon a time, you could have a good life with nothing more than a high school diploma, but those times are gone now. Competition for even the lowest level jobs is fierce, and most employers will give the edge to that extra education now. Jobs that never required a degree before now will certainly be given to the most educated candidate as markets grow tighter and tighter.

Education is not only important on the job front, however. Recent studies show that continually learning will keep your brain more healthy. The more active you keep your brain now， the more active it will remain in the long run.
