Good computer skills are desirable in today’s digital age,and playing computer games can help children practice those skills—as long as they don’t overdo it.scientists warn.A British study found that those who played computer games less than once a week achieved better grades at school than ones who played them twice a day or more often. The study also found that daily use of social media did not affect school performance.

“It was clear that social media didn’t have any impact.I think that’s more because social media is part of every child’s life. It’s the way they communicate. It’s the way they keep in touch with their friends,”said Celine McStravick of the National Children’s Bureau Northern Ireland.

Parents increasingly complain of having difficulty getting their children away from computer games. Some even seek help for their teenagers who they say are addicted to them. The study did not look into addiction, but suggested computer games can cause children to stay up late in the evenings, making them tired and less able to focus at school the next day.

Mark Starkey, the owner of the Heart of Gaming computer game outlet(批发商)in London, said there is also the difference between older games and the new ones.

“The ability to make games a lot more bigger,a lot more detailed,a lot more complex is here now. It's going to hold their attention longer.‘Oh my god,I have to see what happens next’etc. However, the old games challenge more your hand-eye coordination(协调),your speed, your timing, your reactions, rather than your imagination,”said Starkey.

The games industry has long claimed there is no proven link between games and addiction. But the new study says additional research is needed to establish the effect of computer game- playing on performance at schoo1.

The U.K.based company,Gumdrop Ltd,has come up with a brilliant idea that enables easy disposal(处理)of chewed gum using specialized recycling bins.Passersby can simply put any unwanted chewing gum into the bright pink receptacles(容器)that have been installed across the city of London.Once full, they are mailed to Gumdrop headquarters where the gum is recycled to other useful things like rubber boots and phone cases as well.

Though the pink bins clearly indicate that they are meant for gum recycling, there is always the risk that people will use them to get rid of all kinds of waste. To ensure that it is just gum that gets recycled, the company has developed a special system that extracts(提取)any foreign items that have been mixed in.

Anna Bullus, who founded the company in 2009,says she was inspired to create the clever receptacles after observing the sticky mess caused by gum waste on the streets of London .To test if people would be willing to dispose of gum responsibly, she set up two bins inside a men’s restroom at Southampton Airport. It was extremely successful! Bullus says they had to pick up the full receptacles five times a year, which cost the company$300 USD.

While the test convinced Bullus that she was on the right track,it took another three years before the pink receptacles were adopted by Legoland outside of London.Their success has led to the rapid deployment of the bright pink bins in the country’s streets, offices and even schools.

Bullus now hopes to take her Gumdrops to countries around the world.Among the top on her list is the U.S.A where an estimated 59%of the population chews gum! The company has also introduced Gumdrop On-the-Go—a personal recycling device that can be attached to key chains enables consumers to get rid of gum waste in a responsible manner.
