Disposing (处理) of waste has been a problem since humans started producing it. As more and more people choose to live close together in cities, the waste disposal problem becomes increasingly difficult.

During the eighteenth century, it was usual for several neighboring towns to get together to select a faraway spot as a dump site. People would transport household rubbish, rotted wood, and old possessions to the site. Periodically some of the trash was burned and the rest was buried. The unpleasant sights and smells caused no problem because nobody lived close by. Factories, mills, and other industrial sites also had waste to be disposed of. Those located on rivers often just dumped the unwanted remains into the water. Others built huge burners with chimneys to deal with the problem.w_w w. k#s5_u.c o*m

Several facts make these choices unacceptable to modern society. The first problem is space. Dumps(垃圾场), which are now called landfills, are most needed in heavily populated areas. Such areas rarely have empty land suitable for this purpose. A long distance dump has been a common practice, but once farm areas are refusing to accept rubbish from elsewhere, cheap land within trucking distance of major city areas is nonexistent. Awareness of pollution dangers has resulted in more strict rules of waste disposal. Pollution of rivers, ground water, land and air is a price people can no longer pay to get rid of waste. The amount of waste, however, continues to grow.

Recycling efforts have become commonplace, and many towns require their people to take part. Even the most efficient recycling programs, however, can hope to deal with only about 50 percent of a city’s reusable waste.w_w_w.k_s5*u.c_o*m

第三部分 写作

第一节 阅读表达(5*2=10分)

阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。

If you have pets, you must have realized by now that they become an indispensable part of your lives and you treasure every moment spent with them. But if you don’t own one, then this article will give you enough reasons to do the same.

A pet needs to be taken care of. It needs to be bathed, groomed, fed and there are other such responsibilities that you need to look after. All this will help you in character building, as you will not only learn to do these lovely things for your pets, but in the long run also learn to take up responsibilities on your own. Children can be taught discipline, responsibilities and organizational skills by handling pets.

2. Help in making friends

Owning a pet makes you do activities such as taking it to the vet, going for a walk, etc. Thus, you get to meet other pet owners and end up asking queries to each other about your pets. In this way, you make acquaintances who then gradually become your friends.

3. Improve your health

For old people, having a pet is a relief as sometimes they pour their hearts out to these silent souls. Pets can help to relieve the boredom, loneliness and stress that is common among aged people and be wonderful companions. Pets reduce the chances of old people going into depression. They even help to improve their health if they are going through any emotional trauma.

4. Improve your mood

Whether you are sulking or unhappy, your pet will always make you happy. If your bird sweetly chirps at you or your cat rubs its paws against your hands as you enter home, won't it instantly cheer you up?

5. Pets for the disabled and aged

For old and disabled people, pets are great companions as well as modes to relax their tension. For the aged, pets can provide them company and play with them. For the disabled, pets cultivate a sense of self-esteem in them.

So if you were still unsure about keeping a pet, this article should surely have helped you to think otherwise.

76.What’s the main idea of the passage? (no more than 5 words)

77.What does the underlined word “this” in the third paragraph refer to ?(no more than 10 words)

To: wangdong@163.com

Dear Xiaodong,

How are you doing?

The other day when I was watching China Report CCTV at home, I was excited to learn that the Chinese government is calling on her people to speed up the reconstruction of their countryside. The report at once took my thoughts back to the small village I once lived in.

The houses were old and low. The roads were muddy and narrow. Villagers had to go a long way on foot or by bike in order to do some shopping or see a doctor in town. Because of very small income, villagers lived quite a plain life, even without TV sets or telephones.

How time flies! It has been 30 years since I left my home village. It must have changed a lot.

Would you please write and tell me something about its changes?

Remember me to your parents!

Yours,

Wang Guifu

Dear Uncle,

I’m very glad to receive your e-mail.

Our village has taken on a new look since you left. Our living conditions are getting better and better. Villagers have moved into big and comfortable houses, all of which are equipped with telephones, TV sets, computers with access to the Internet, etc. Wide roads have been built to connect villages and towns and some families have got their own tractors, trucks and even cars.

How do the changes come about? First of all, the government cares a great deal about the reconstruction of our countryside. Besides, all the villagers are working hard together to improve our life, trying to build a better future.

I hope you and Aunt will come back and have a good look at the new village in person.

Best wishes!

Yours

Xiaodong
