Narcissus is a kind of beautiful and graceful flower. It’s said that its name came from a handsome youth. A fairy story tells about that.

There lived a handsome young man named Narcissus. His lovely face and graceful form were the admiration of all who looked upon him. And he knew it. He was so vain that he thought no one but he himself was worthy to see his youthful beauty. Thus given up to sweet thoughts of self, Narcissus avoided all the other people and wandered(漫游) in the wooded little valleys alone every day, madly in love with himself.

When he was delightfully wandering through the woods one day, a wood fairy maiden(仙女) called Echo caught sight of him. She was excited at once. Joyfully moving down down towards Narcissus, she stretched out her loving arms. To her disappointment, however, the young man roughly brushed her aside and went by without so much as a glance at her. The poor fairy maiden’s face turned red and quickly withdrew(回撤) to a shady spot, following the young man she loved so much with her longing eyes.

Now Narcissus stopped to drink from a little stream. Kneeling down on the bank, he saw a lovely face in the clear water. H is heart gave a beat. He smiled and was smiled back to. Thinking that it must be a girl in love with him, he bent down to kiss her. And her lips also drew near his. But as soon a he touched the clear surface, the lovely face disappeared. The angry youth was now desperate. Never had he been looked down upon like that before. Day and night, he stayed at the stream without drinking and eating. Before long he died, never realizing that his loving girl was just his own image in the stream . The gods took pity on the beautiful dead body and turned it into a flower bearing his name, Narcissus.

In the computer age, a broadband Internet connection is very popular now. Whether cable or mobile broadband, today’s connections are many times faster than those in the early days. Videos play smoothly, complex websites load quickly, and files download much faster than ten years ago. And the files are much bigger, too.

But there’s still a catch: You have to live near enough to a major city to get broadband Internet. If you don’t, it’s slow dial-up access for you. And for those living really far out, there may be no Internet access at all.

Technology experts often talk about the “last mile” problem, which refers to the difficulty of bringing Internet access to remote locations. In cities and suburbs, it’s relatively easy to provide access for everyone. It is much more difficult to deliver access to those living far from cities, especially in developing countries. Internet service providers, for their part, have been reluctant to provide access to sparsely (稀疏地) populated areas. The handful of Internet users they would reach wouldn’t cover the expense.

But every year, technological advancements allow of more and more Internet users. Most broadband connections today run over existing cable TV and telephone lines although these technologies aren’t available everywhere.

Some companies have delivered the Internet over standard power lines. Advancements in cheaper, more efficient fiber optics cables (光纤电缆) promise to bring extremely fast Internet connections to more users.

Still, the “last mile” problem remains hard to deal with. There will always be somewhere that doesn’t have an affordable broadband connection. But someday that might not matter. If the rapid progress in cell phone technology is any indication (迹象), it may not be too long before an Internet connection simply follows you wherever you go.

60.The underlined part “a catch”  in Paragraph 2 probably means “_____”.

A.a big task   B.a wonderful plan

C.a hidden problem  D.a major city

61.According to Paragraph 4, technological advancements       .

A.make TV and telephone available everywhere

B.make it possible for more people to use the Internet

D.bring faster Internet connections to users

62.What may finally deal with the “last mile” problem?

A.The rapid progress in cell phone technology.

B.More and more Internet users.

C.More and more Internet connections.

D.The broadband connection’s getting faster.
