(D) First impressions last
New research by psychologists from Canada, Belgium, and the US suggests there is a lot of truth to the saying that “you never get a second chance to make a first impression”. The findings say that new experience that contradict a first impression remain tied to the context in which they were made. As a result, the new experiences influence people’s reactions only in that particular context, while first impressions still dominate(处于主导地位) in other contexts.
“Imagine you have a new colleague at work and your impression of that person is not very good,” explains lead author Bertram Gawronski, Canada Research Chair at the University of Western Ontario. “A few weeks later, you meet your colleague at a party and you realize he is actually a very nice guy.”
Although you know your first impression was wrong, according to Gawronski, your first reaction to your new colleague will be “influenced by your new experience only in contexts that are similar to the party”.
“However, your first impression will still not change in all other contexts,” Gawronski says.
To look further into first impressions, Gawronski and his colleagues showed their study participants either positive or negative information about an unknown individual on a computer screen. Later in that study, participants were given new information about the same individual, information which contradicted the first impression. To study the influence of contexts, the researchers changed the color of the computer screen slightly while participants formed an impression of the target person.’
The researchers later measured participants’ first reactions to an image of the target person. They found the new information influenced participants reactions only in situations like the one in which it was formed. Otherwise, participants’ reactions were still dominated by their first impression of the person set in the particular background.
Although first impressions tend to last, Gawronski notes they can sometimes change. He explains that for this to happen the first impression has to be challenged in a number of different contexts.
According to Gawronski, the research may be helpful in the treatment of some disorders. Gawronski gives the example of someone with a fear of spiders. A psychologist could perhaps help the person by treating him or her in a number of different contexts, rather than simply in the psychologist’s office.

A. the participants’ reactions differed even when the screen color remained the same
B. the participants had the same reactions before and after being given contrary information
C. the participants had a different reaction after being given contrary information
D. the participants’ reactions were dominated by their first impression

第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
认真阅读下列短文,根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
We are not born with courage, but neither are we born with fear.Maybe some of our fears are brought on by your own experiences, by what someone has told you, by what you’ve read in the papers. Some fears are reasonable, like walking alone in a bad part of town at two o’clock in the morning. But once you learn to avoid that situation, you won’t need to live in fear of it.
Fears, even the most basic ones, can totally destroy our ambitions.Fear can destroy fortunes.Fear can destroy relationships.Fear, if left uncontrolled, can destroy our lives.Fear is one of the many enemies hidden inside us.
Let me tell you about five of the other enemies we face from within. The first enemy that you’ve got to destroy before it destroys you is indifference. What a tragic disease this is! “Ho-hum, let it slide.I’ll just drift along.” Here’s one problem with drifting: you can’t drift your way to the top of the mountain.
The second enemy we face is indecision.Indecision is the thief of opportunity and enterprise. It will steal your chances for a better future.Take a sword to this enemy.
The third enemy inside is doubt.Sure, there’s room for healthy skepticism. You can’t believe everything. But you also can’t let doubt take over. Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities and doubt the opportunities.Worst of all, they doubt themselves.I’m telling you, doubt will destroy your life and your chances of success. It will empty both your bank account and your heart.Doubt is an enemy.Go after it.Get rid of it.
The fourth enemy within is worry. We’ve all got to worry some.Just don’t let it defeat you.Instead, let it alarm you.Worry can be useful. If you step off the sidewalk in New York City and a taxi is coming, you’ve got to worry. But you can’t let worry loose like a mad dog that drives you into a small corner. Here’s what you’ve got to do with your worries: drive them into a small corner.Whatever is out to get you, you’ve got to get it.Whatever is pushing on you, you’ve got to push back.
The fifth enemy inside is overcaution. It is the timid (胆怯的) approach to life.Timidity is not a virtue; it’s an illness. If you let it go, it’ll defeat you.Timid people don’t get promoted. They don’t advance and grow. You’ve got to avoid overcaution.
Do battle with the enemies.Do battle with your fears.Build your courage to fight what’s holding you back, what’s keeping you from your goals and dreams.Be courageous in your life and in your pursuit of the things you want and the person you want to become.

Dear Dr Wang,
I read your magazine every month .I am a teenager, almost 18,and have some problems at home that I hope you can help me with .
The main problem is that I can’t get along with my parents. When I suggest doing something together, such as going to a restaurant, they wouldn’t listen. Also, they always make me do things I don’t like, such as doing housework. Then, whenever I have some spare time and want to watch a DVD, they insist that I should spend more time on my studies.
I love them a lot, but I don’t understand why they are so hard on me and will not respect the things I want to do .They were once teenagers—they should understand me better than they do.
Best wishes,
Zhang Xiaolin
Dear Xiaolin.
Thank you for writing us about your problems with your parents.____________________
