I. Listening Comprehension
Section A
Directions: In Section A, you will hear ten short conversations between two speakers. At the end of each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. The conversation and the question will be spoken only once. After you hear a conversation and the question about it, read the four possible answers on your paper, and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard.
1. M: When does the next train leave?
W: You have just missed one by 5 minutes. Trains leave every fifteen minutes, so you’ll have to wait for a while.
Q: How long does the man have to wait for the next train? (B)
2. M: Mum,would you help to turn off the alarm?
W: But you said you would see a friend off at the airport this morning, Tom.
Q: Where is Tom now? (D)
3. M: The working hours are from 9 to 11, Monday through Friday.
W: Do I have any paid holidays?
Q: What are they talking about? (C)
4. W: May I help you?
M: Yes. I forgot to ask for a receipt for what I bought.
Q: What’s the relationship between the two speakers? (C)
5. W: Can you come to the concert with me this weekend, or do you have to
prepare for exams?
M: I still have a lot to do, eh...but maybe a break would do me good.
Q: What will the man probably do? (D)
6. W: Has Sally ever missed coming to one of our parties?
M: Only once…or twice, at the most.
Q: What does the man say about Sally? (D)
7. W: Excuse me, sir, visiting hours are over now, you must leave so that your
mother can get some rest.
M: Pardon me, nurse, I didn’t hear the bell or I would have left.
Q: Why did the nurse want the man to leave? (B)
8. W: They say the train won’t arrive until nine.
M: Well, that means there will be another delay in our schedule.
Q: What can we learn from this conversation? (B)
9. M: Does George still smoke?
W: I haven’t seen him light up since the baby was born.
Q: What does the woman imply? (D)
10. W: Did you catch sight of Professor Stiller on TV last night?
M: I almost missed it! But my mother just happened to be watching at home and gave me a call.
Q: What does the man mean? (B)
Section B
Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages, and you will be asked three questions on each of the passages. The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
Ok, everyone. May I have your attention? I’m Bill Smith, director of the school play for this year. It’s a great pleasure to have you as assistants to help organize the play. I’m sending around a form for you to put down some information on how we can get in touch with you, so please put your name and phone down. Also please write down the performances that you will be able to help with. I realize that everybody can’t come to each performance, but the more you attend, the better. However, you should also keep in mind that we will need much time, and we may end up staying quite late into the evening.
If you have any special skills, it would be good for you to write those down on the paper as well. In particular, we need two lighting and sound people. We have hired one full-time lighting man, but one person can’t do everything. We need several people to help out setting up the lights.
Once you have all marked down any special skills you might have to offer, please return the form to me. At our next meeting on Tuesday, we’ll begin talking about all the different jobs. While you’re waiting for the sheet to get passed around. I’ll be happy to answer any questions that you have today.
Question 11. What will the listeners be asked to do? (B)
Question 12. What can we learn about their work? (A)
Question 13. What will the speaker do after the speech? (A)
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
I come into work at eight o’clock and the first thing I do is to collect my keys, then I go down to the common room, I sweep and I wash the floor and I also check the toilet and when there’s no students in the classrooms, I empty the bins and do the rooms and I also help over the canteen to do teas and coffees, and I usually sweep the stairs and then wash them again and I leave off at two o’clock.
What I particularly hate is having to be at work at a certain time and leave off at a certain time and have to work to a pattern all the while, and also I do hate cigarette and dirty tissues about the floor. I think there’s nothing more shameful that somebody got to pick a dirty tissue up that someone’s used and also to pick cigarette ends up that have been in other people’s mouths. If I were to get paid for every cigarette end I pick up I would be a rich lady.
What I like about my job is I am free and easy. I work on my own and so I want to do something this day I do it, and if I want to do something the next day I do it. I find the students very friendly. They will come and talk to you in their breaks or any spare time, and they will tell you all about their countries, and it’s very interesting.
Question 14. What is the speaker? (B)
Question 15. What is the disadvantage of the job? (C)
Question 16. Which of the following is NOT true about the students? (D)
Section C
Directions: In Section C, you will hear two longer conversations. The conversations will be read twice. After you hear each conversation, you are required to fill in the numbered blanks with the information you have heard. Write your answers on your answer sheet.
Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.
W: Could I see the manager, please?
M: Yes, I’m the manager here. What can I do for you?
W: Did you have the room checked before we moved in?
M: Which room are you in, madam?
W: 1808. The toilet doesn’t work properly, the water doesn’t run in the shower, but the tap was leaking the whole night, and there is water all over the bathroom floor.
M: I’m very sorry to hear that. These days we’ve been extremely busy with an international meeting. I’ll check it right away.
W: I never expected this sort of thing to happen in such a four-star hotel.
M: I do apologize. We’ll change your room to 2003. It has a beautiful view of the harbour. And you’ll enjoy a three-day free stay in our hotel.
Complete the form. Write ONE WORD for each answer.
Blanks 21 through 24 are based on the following conversation.
M: I see your resume that you worked as a manager of store called Computer Country, could you tell me a little more about your responsibilities there?
W: Sure. I was responsible for overseeing about 30 employees. I did all of the orderings for the store.
M: What was the most difficult part of your job?
W: Probably handling angry customers. We didn’t have them very often, but when we did, I need to make sure they were well taken good care of. After all, the customer is always right.
M: That’s how we feel here, too. How long did you work there?
W: I was there for three and a half years. I left the company last month.
M: And why did you leave?
W: My husband has been transferred to Boston and I understand that your company has an opening there, too.
M: Yes, that’s right. We do. But the position won’t start until early next month. Would that be a problem for you?
W: No, not at all. My husband’s new job doesn’t begin for a few weeks, so we thought we would spend some time driving to Boston and stop to see my parents.
M: That sounds nice. So, tell me, why are you interested in this particular position?
W: I know that your company is well known nationally for its good services. I’ve thought many times that I would like to be a part of it. When I heard about the opening in Boston, I jumped to the opportunity.
M: Well, I’m glad you did.
Complete the form. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.
