Using connectives to link contrasting ideas

Pre-task preparation
Language learning activity
(This section aims at providing students with opportunities to practise the language/vocabulary needed or become familiar with the background for the task that follows.
1. Introduce: Although. Write a few sample sentences on the board to help explaining the meaning, e.g. Although Mary is thin, she is healthy./Although John is poor, he is happy./Although Uncle Tom is rich, he is unhappy.
2. Invite a few more able students to make up some sentences beginning with ‘Although’. Ask them to write the sentences on the board. Offer help if necessary. Then go over the sentences with the whole class.
3. Play the recording: Look and read. Stop the recording after Picture 2. Students listen and follow in their books.
4. Ask the students some questions to check their understanding of the story, e.g. What’s the name of the farmer and his wife? /Where did they live? /Who visited them one winter night? /Did they still work in the fields? Etc.
5. Remind students that the story is not finished yet and will be continued on page 50 of the Student’s Book. However, you may encourage students to guess what is going to happen pr or the ending of the story before you go on..

I’ll … After listening to the student’s answers, you can put them in another way and say: Although ( the student’s name) is good at (a subject), he/she is poor at (another subject). He/She’ll … Have students work in pairs and talk in the same way about the subjects they are good at and poor at and what they will do about it. Walk around, offering help and guidance to the less able students.
2. Invite a few pairs to report their findings in class, e.g
S1: Although S2 is good at _____, he/she is poor at ____. He/She will …
S2: Although 51 is good at ______, he/she is poor at. He /She will …
3. Play the recording: Think and say. Students listen and follow in their books.
4. Play the recording again. Students listen and repeat.
