Group work

The students should discuss any habits that they would like to change and talk about how they plan to improve themselves next year.

T: Do you have any habit you want to stop? You are going to talk about that habit and how you want to improve yourself next year.

In groups of four, take turns asking and answering questions about habits you would like to change and how you plan to improve yourself next year. Use the dialogue on page 28 as a guide. Any plans you discuss should be practical and real.

Model Dialogue

1: I spend too much time on computer games. Next year, I am going to play computer games only for two hours on Saturdays.

2: I listen to music with headphones and the music is too loud. I don’t think it is good for my ears. Next year, I am not going to listen to music that is too loud.

3: I wake up too late every morning. That’s why I have to run to school every day. Next year, I am going to wake up early.

4: I chat on the phone too long. Next year, I am going to talk on the phone only to say that I need to say.

Grammar

Remind the students about the grammar points found in Units 1 to 3.

T: What were the grammar points in Units 1, 2 and 3?

S: In Unit 1, we learned about relative pronouns; in Unit 2, the verbs taking gerunds or to-infinitives; and in Unit 3, auxiliary verbs to show the future.

Activity A

In this activity, students should review all the grammar facts they have learned.

T: We have a dialogue between Li Jun and Susan. They are talking about e-pals. Try to understand what they are saying and choose the correct words.

Why don’t you role-play the dialogue with your partner? The person on the right can take Li Jun’s role and the person on the left can take Susan’s role.

Activity B

Ask the students to complete the passage by filling in the correct words. Have the students check their answers by having a volunteer read the passage he or she has completed.

T: This time, there is a passage. Choose the correct word for each blank. You have a list of words on the left.

Let’s have a volunteer. Who wants to say the completed passage?

Puzzle

Let the students write the letters in the right boxes.

T: We are going to solve a puzzle.

Look at the pictures and write the words. Only one or two letters in each word are presented. After filling in each box, you need to collect the letters from the numbered boxes. These collected letters, if you put them in order, will make up a new expression at the bottom of the page.

Before you write the words for the pictures, can anybody guess what the hidden expression would be? The expression means the way in which you show your feelings or thoughts to other people by means of the position or movements of your body, rather than with words. Take a guess!

S: Body language?

T: We will see later if your guess is correct.

If possible, have a chocolate bar or other small prize on hand. The prize can be given to the first student who correctly finishes the puzzle.

T: When you are done, please raise your hand. I have a prize for the first person to finish the puzzle correctly.

Remind students of the body language they learned in Unit 2.

T: Is there any body language you remember now?

If time allows, ask the students to make up one or two sentences with the words.

T: When you are done with the puzzle, start making sentences with the words you have figured out.

Sample Sentences

E-mail – I am sending an e-mail to my classmates.

pal – Let me introduce my old pal from kindergarten.

playground – Some children are having fun on the playground.

Textbook – Please open your textbook to page 24.

mistake – You didn’t do it on purpose, so I know it was a mistake.

shake hands – We usually shake hands when we meet for the first time.

Canada – I was born in Canada.

classroom – Nobody is in the classroom now.

Practice asking and answering this: I ____. Next year, I’m going to ____. What are you going to do next year?

Talk about how to use them: who / that; doing / do; etc.

Finish off the puzzle, and use these words to make up some sentences.

2. I can’t help thinking about the e-pal I will get. 学习think的用法。

3. But we were late for the movie. 注意late的使用。
