Unit 5 Abilities(Welcome to the unit and Comic strip)
1. To arouse Ss’interest about personal abilities
2. To revise vocabulary about helping people in the community
3. To generate ideas about ways to care for and help others

Procedures
Step 1 Warm-up activities
1. Free talk about Ss’ abilities.
It’s the beginning of the school year. Now I want to know something about your abilities.
Can you swim/rid e a bicycle/ fly a kite/ play computer games/ fly?
Last term, I asked you to watch the film’ superman’.
How much do you know about Superman? (fly, do meaningful things for people in need, fun fast)
2. Lead into the Modal verb: can/ could (we use can to talk about the present, we use could to talk about the past)
3. Ss practice the patterns about ‘can/ could’ in pairs.
Shirley and Amy’s conversation.
S: A bird ________ fly, we _______ fly but we ________ do sth meaningful to help others. Do you think so?
A:Yes, of course. For example, we __________plant tre es on Tree Planting Day.
S: Yes. We ________ also clean up the park on Sundays.
A: Mmm. We __________ collect things for Project Hope.
S: We_______ also give a seat to someone on the bus
A: If we see an old man in the street, we_______ help him to cross the road.
S: You are right. We ______ do many things to help others. If everyone can
help each other, the world will become more and more beautiful.
Step 2 Presentation/ Practice

1. Present Hobo and Eddie’s outing. Ss talk about the Comic strips in gr oups.(p38)
2. Play the tape for Ss to listen and give their answers according to the tape and the pictures. The following questions for them:
What does Eddie think of himself? ( he’s a super dog)
What do you think of Eddie? (he’s showing himself off)
What message can you get from Eddie? (don’t copy Eddie’s example)
3. Get some pairs to act out the p art according to the pictures on the slide show.
Step 3 Activating
1.people have different abilities, some people use them to help others.
what can we do if somebody needs help in the community?
A. help disabled , ill/ sick, old/ weak , poor people;
B. do some meaningful things: (看挂图,写短语what are they doing?)
Planting trees (plant can also be used as a noun, meaning a living thing that grows in the earth. In unit 4 we’ve learnt a sentence’ there’s no plant life without lightning. )
H elping an old man
Giving a seat to someone on the bus(sit: verb; seat: noun. Go back to your seat and sit down)
Collecting things for Projec t Hope
Cleaning up the park
Visiting a home for the elderly
Step 4 new words.
new phrases(open the books and take some notes)
Be careful! 祈使句,用于唤起某人的注意
Take care! Look out!但警告语气更强烈。
Be careful when you are crossing the road.过马路时要当心。
Be careful with ….
She is careful with her diet bec ause she wants to keep healthy.
clean up为动词习惯表达,“打扫干净”。副词up常跟在动词后意思为“彻底地完全地。”eat up 吃光; finish up…彻底完成某事
a home for the elderly可以翻译成“养老院或敬老院”
elderly是形容词,前加定冠词the,表示一类人,相当于the old, the old people, the elders.
类似结构the poor the rich the young
Step 5 Pro duction
1. Give the English for these:(小黑板)
A. 1.当心/小心 be careful
2. 植树/种 草 plant trees/ grass
3. 给某人让座 give a seat to somebody
4. 为希望工程收集东西 clean up the park
5. 清理公园 a home for the elderly
6. 老人之家 collect things for Project Hope
B.1. 去年我就会骑自行车了。I could ride a bike last year
2. 上个星期我能自己洗衣服了。can do some washing/ wash clothes by myself.
3. 你昨天会读这篇课文吗?会。Could you read the text last week?Yes, I could.
4. 上个月他们不会游泳,但是现在会了。They could not swim last month, but now they can
