8. pretend

pretend作及物动词，意为“假装”，后接动词不定式to do或that从句。

1)pretend to do sth 假装做某事

He pretended to be friendly with me. 他假装对我友善。

Don’t　pretend　to　know　when　you　don’t. 不要不懂装懂。

2)pretend + that从句

She pretended that she was not at home when we rang the bell. 　　当我们打电话时，她假装不在家。

We　pretended　nothing　had　happened. 我们假装什么事情也没发生。

9. chase

1)chase作及物动词，意为“追逐;追捕”。

The cat chased the mouse. 猫追老鼠。

2)chase作及物动词，意为“赶出,驱逐”。

She chased the children from her yard. 她把那些孩子赶出院子。

3)chase after　 意为“追捕, 跑步追上”。

The huntsmen rode fast, chasing after the fox.

猎人们疾驶, 追捕那只狐狸。

Chase after Anne and ask her to buy some eggs while she’s at the shops. 　　追上安妮, 告诉她在商店里买些鸡蛋。

chase after　还意为“追求(某人)”。

She’s been chasing after that man for years. 　　数年来, 她一直在追求那个男人。

10. use up

1. use作名词

1) (be) in use 正在使用

The dictionary is in use. 词典正被使用。

2) (be) of use有用处;起作用

The phone is of great use. 手机很有用。

3) make (good / full ) use of (好好 / 充分)利用

We should make full use of every minute in order to learn English well.

为了学好英语，我们应该充分利用每一分钟。

2. use作动词

1)使用;运用。

As a student, you should learn how to use a dictionary. 　　作为学生，你应该学会如何使用词典。

2)与for或as连用，构成短语use...for，意为“用来做……;为了……而使用”，

use...as意为“作为……使用;用作……之意”。

Bamboo can be used for carrying water. 竹子可以用来运水。

The computer can be used as a tool. 计算机可以被当作工具用。

3)used to后跟动词不定式，used to do sth. 意为“过去常常做某事”，暗示现在已经不再做某事。

be/get/become used to doing sth意为“习惯于做某事”。

He used to be a quiet boy. 他过去是个安静的男孩。

He came from the north, so he wasn’t used to living in the south.

他来自北方，所以不习惯于住在南方。

11. escape

1) escape表示“逃走”或“逃脱”，已含有“脱离”的意思，因此通常不与away，off 等副词连用。

The thief has escaped. 小偷逃走了。

2) escape作不及物动词，后可接介词 from，意为“从……逃离”。

They escaped from the burning house. 他们从着火的房子里逃了出来。

Some gas is escaping from the pipe. 煤气管在漏气。

A lion has escaped from its cage. 有一只狮子从笼子里逃走了。

3) escape作及物动词，表示“被遗忘或未被注意”等。

Nothing escaped his attention. 任何东西逃不过他的注意。
