The Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous 20th-century buildings. It has become a symbol of Sydney and Australia.
The base (地基) for the building was started in 1959, years before the designs were finished. It took Danish architect (丹麦建筑师) Jorn Utzon four years to design the Opera House. By 1962 the designs were finished and construction began. In 1967, people started the decoration inside. In total (总共) it took 14 years to build the Opera House and it was opened on the 20th of October 1973 by Queen Elizabeth II.
It cost around $160 million to build the Sydney Opera House and the money was paid by the public. 6,225 square metres of glass was used to build it. The Opera House has about 1,000 rooms. It is 185 metres long and 120 metres wide. The building’s roof sections weigh about 15 tons. Each year, this fantastic building attracts 200,000 tourists to come for a visit or enjoy events in it.
The Opera House reaches out into the harbour. It is amazing and unforgettable, offering people a strong sense of beauty.
