Henry Ford was the first person to build cars which were cheap, strong and fast. He was able to sell million models because he “mass-produced”them, that is, he made a great many cars of exactly the same type. Henry’s father hoped that his son would become a farmer, but the young man did not like the idea and he went Detroit(底特律)where he worked as a mechanic(机械师). By the age of 29, in 1892, he had built his first car. However, the first“mass-produced”car in the world, the famous“Model T”, did not appear until 1908, five years after Henry Ford had started his great Motor Company. This kind of car was so popular that it was unchanged for twenty years.

One day Mrs. Perry said to her husband, “Jack, I’m going to a ladies’ luncheon(午宴). I know you won’t cook. So I’ll leave you some food for your lunch. Is that all right?”

“Oh, yes,”her husband answered. “That’s quite all right. What are you going to leave for my lunch?”

“This tin of fish,”Mrs. Perry said. “And some potatoes and peas, too.”

“Good,”Mr. Perry answered, “I’ll have a good lunch.”But he was not so sure about the food, for he knew his wife quite well. She liked to buy faked(假的)things because the price was low.

So Mrs. Perry went to her party and at three o’clock she came home.

“Was your fish nice, Jack?”she asked.

“Yes, but my feet got hurt,”he answered.

“But how? And why?”

“Well, I followed the words on the tin and got hurt.”

Mrs. Perry looked at the instruction on the packaging: ‘Open this tin and stand in hot water for five minutes. It was clear that there was a word missing in the instruction, and this showed that it was a faked product(假货). Mrs. Perry felt very sorry.
